I hold Marriott Bonvoy Titanium status, and at check-in I clearly selected complimentary breakfast as my welcome gift. Frankly, I believe almost everyone would choose this option. However, the next morning, when I went to breakfast and followed the staff’s guidance to the buffet, the charge was added to my bill. When I explained that breakfast should be complimentary due to my Titanium status, I was told that the complimentary breakfast does not include the buffet, and that it only covers coffee and a very limited selection of items. To make matters worse, I was then told that I had not selected breakfast as my welcome gift, which is simply incorrect. In the end, after repeatedly explaining that I had indeed chosen breakfast, the charge was waived “as a special exception.” However, situations like this seriously damage the overall travel experience. More fundamentally, I explicitly selected the breakfast option, and serving only limited items in a buffet venue—while charging for the buffet without clear explanation—is completely unreasonable and misleading.
