Rugs Hotel Düsseldorf

We stayed there for one night from February 5th to 6th. Excellent location, with about a dozen Asian restaurants right outside. The room was very clean, but unfortunately the beds were too hard and the pillows too soft. The super friendly receptionist recommended we pre-order mattress toppers next time. There's a small underground parking garage directly opposite the hotel, and the breakfast room looked nice, but we hadn't booked breakfast. For the price, it was excellent!

The hotel itself was quite nice, the room was spacious and the hotel in a very central location. The actual staff at the hotel were very kind and hospitable, so my 1-star review for service is not for them. This hotel uses AI to check you in, staff stop working at 3PM (when check in starts) and you are expected to check yourself in. I arrived just before midnight, had not received any information about self check in, and had no access to the building. I booked using a third party service, which as per their privacy restrictions, they for some insane reason cannot share my contact information with the hotel at which I am staying. Yes, this is a problem with said service and not the hotel, however this hotel should make ABUNDANTLY clear 1) to contact them if you do not hear from them, 2) that it is an AI self check in, and 3) there will be no people working when you arrive. There were no humans working anywhere for me to talk to, and the number they gave to call on a poster taped to the door was not working for me no matter how I tried to call. I’m unsure if I’m not able to call German numbers, either way this is a huge oversight for travellers who don’t have an international phone plan, or perhaps even a phone. Especially since it was not communicated that I may have to call someone upon arrival in order to access my room. Thankfully I was able to access the lobby by following another guest in. I was thankfully able to contact a relative back in Canada who, after having to again try multiple times, was able to call the AI number (which was entirely unhelpful, obviously). After speaking to a person I finally received an access code, which ended up not being my access code so only worked for the building and not the room. The call unfortunately dropped before this could be communicated, and as it’s a third party call centre, they had no way to call my relative back. Again, this is a huge oversight in outsourcing these services. My relative called back the call centre, and thankfully, after an HOUR from arriving, I got the code for my room. After being exhausted from travelling all day, I nearly had to sleep in the lobby (I was actively falling asleep in a lobby chair when my relative said they were finally able to reach someone), and had to navigate these manufactured barriers in accessing the services and room I had already paid for. This forced reliance on technology, especially incompetent technology, is abhorrent and the antithesis of hospitality. It is beyond unfortunate this industry is embracing this direction, hurting guests and workers alike.

An absolute disaster! There were massive problems right from check-in; the promised codes never arrived despite multiple calls. They were finally provided around 8 pm, after a long wait on the phone outside the entrance. Inside the room, there was mold on the walls, haphazardly covered with broken curtains, a dirty floor, and an emergency exit with obvious safety deficiencies. To top it all off, the parking space that had been confirmed in writing was no longer available (finding a parking spot in downtown Düsseldorf at night was a nightmare). This hotel is in a terrible state and absolutely not recommended!!!
