First of all, you should know that this is not a western style hotel. It is a traditional Japanese ryokan (traditional Japanese inn). This means that you’ll be sleeping on a traditional Japanese mat (futon), on a tatami (bamboo) floor, and some of the walls are made of paper. There are no showers in the rooms, but instead you get to enjoy a lovely private spa/bath (you schedule your bath time each day) and will be staying in a very tranquil and traditional spot. This type of place is for travelers that want to experience a traditional Japanese inn and don’t mind giving up some of the luxuries of a contemporary western hotel. The staff is great. I’d stay here again and I’d recommend it for others.

Such an amazing traditional experience if you are ever in Kyoto. The owners make you feel so welcome and at home. Service was 10/10 and I had the best nights sleep. We visited the Onsen and had the traditional breakfast the next morning. Wish we were here for dinner (they close on Wednesday evenings) as I’m sure that would’ve been incredible too!

I enjoyed a Kyoto kaiseki meal at Izuyasu, a historic ryokan inn located within walking distance of Kyoto Station and right next to Higashi Honganji Temple. Founded in 1839, the inn's charming townhouse architecture is truly captivating, and from the moment I entered, I was enveloped in an extraordinary atmosphere. The menu was designed with the seasons and the 24 solar terms in mind, and each dish was richly flavored with exquisite dashi. Starting with the hassun (sushi appetizer), the soup, sashimi, grilled dishes, simmered dishes, and even yellowtail rice, each dish showcased the gentle flavors of the ingredients. The yellowtail rice, in particular, was truly moving from start to finish. ✨ But what impressed me most was the personality of the seventh-generation owner and staff. They were incredibly warm and kind, and their attentiveness in maintaining just the right level of comfort made me truly appreciate the saying, "A good inn is determined by its people." Another attraction is the ability to dine leisurely at the tasteful counter designed by the owner himself, and you can truly relax in the quiet space of a Kyoto machiya townhouse. This is truly an inn and restaurant for adults, where you can experience the essence of Kyoto in everything from the food to the atmosphere and hospitality. I'm sure it's a place that will be enjoyed for anniversaries, meals with loved ones, or when bringing guests from far away. I'd definitely like to return in a different season.
