I was very disappointed in Salamander DC. I booked the Holiday Afternoon Tea, the Sound Bath at the Spa and overnight accommodations. I was greeted by a friendly valet and was excited to start my “girls” weekend with my sister visiting from Colorado and my daughter. Dressed in our Holiday outfits ready to embrace the Holiday atmosphere and photo ready I was shocked to walk into an empty lobby with not a trace of a holiday decor. I asked the front desk at check in to see if the tea had been moved hoping for some kind of logical explanation only to find out all the decorations were removed the previous night, even so they had one more day of the Holiday Afternoon Tea booked. I spoke to the restaurant manager and the front desk manager who seems genuinely shocked they had been removed and apologized. They told me how beautiful the decorations were - gingerbread houses of all the monuments, wreaths and greenery. This did not make me feel any better only more disappointed. The front desk manager said he would look into some kind of compensation for their obvious error. I decided to go ahead with the Un-Holiday Tea, and even so the food was tasty the dismal lounge atmosphere tainted the experience. My room was pleasant enough and we did really enjoy the Sound Bath at the Spa but I was shocked at check out they still offered no compensation for the Holiday Tea - which obviously was not what they advertised it would be. I was told corporate management was still on break and had to decide the compensation. How does a place like Salamander let a guest leave unsatisfied with no resolution? Poor management from the top. There are plenty of Holiday Afternoon Tea options in DC which I highly recommend trying but I will 100% stay away from Salamander and you should too. Who know when the Salamander grinch will take the decorations away and leave you with a plain dismal lounge?

Do not stay here if you want a luxury hotel. I booked this hotel on Amex Fine Resorts Hotel and this is not a luxury hotel. This is a 3.5 - 4 star hotel that is advertised as luxury. The location is excellent and the restaurant Dogon delicious. The hotel breakfast was underwhelming with servings of powdered eggs. The spa services are great however, the spa facilities are very underwhelming and I would only recommend using the facilities for approximately 30 - 45 minutes prior to your service. Of note, there are no communal spaces and all spaces are separated by gender. Ultimately, you are being sold a luxury experience, paying for luxury experience, and this is more similar to a DoubleTree Hotel or standard Hilton Hotel.

Unfortunately, our stay was very disappointing due to a series of service and cleanliness issues. Upon entering our room, we found a dirty diaper left on the floor, which immediately raised concerns about housekeeping standards. Later that evening, housekeeping entered our room at 8pm while our children were sleeping — if no one answers at that hour, staff should simply move on. Check-in was especially frustrating. Our room was not ready when we arrived, and when one half of the suite became available, the other half was not. Despite multiple follow-ups, we didn’t receive keys to the full suite until 7:15pm. As a result, one of our children had to fall asleep on the couch, which was both inconvenient and unacceptable. The front desk experience added to the frustration; when we told staff we were checking in, they actually sighed, which felt rude and unwelcoming. Additional issues throughout the stay included elevators that frequently were not working properly, items missing from our in-room dining order, and a lack of basic room information. There was no welcome note, no information on what number to dial for the front desk or room service, no streaming services available, and the curtains didn’t fully close. Overall, this stay fell far below expectations, particularly for families, and we were disappointed by both the service and attention to detail.
