Smart Suites on the Hill

I just stayed two nights at Larkin Hospitality’s “Smart Suites on the Hill.” It was the most unsafe, and unhygienic, hotel experience I’ve had in 40 years of traveling. On my first night I went to the bathroom just after midnight to get some water—and there encountered roaches eating toothpaste off my toothbrush, as well as off the toothpaste tube. I snatched my toothbrush and they skittered down the drain of the sink. I was able to make a couple frames of the stragglers with my iPhone (attached). I spent the next half an hour wrapping my belongings in plastic bags. I wanted out of the hotel and the next morning asked the front desk clerk Karen for the manager’s name and number, which she provided. I called manager Holy McKnight over and over throughout the day, to no avail; the phone just rang and rang—never going to voicemail. In the evening I asked a different clerk—Madison—what gives. She called Holy personally; Holy relayed her apology, as well as an offer to remove the cost of one night’s stay. That offer seemed fine—until the next morning, when I got stuck in their elevator. On the morning of October 12th the hotel’s power went out, leaving me stuck in the elevator between floors. It was pitch black (no emergency lights). After about 20 seconds I could hear the power turn back on, though the elevator still didn’t move. I tried to pry open the doors, to no avail. Finally it started moving again. Add to these incidents the unkept state of the place: gross chunks of food on the floor of my room (pic also attached), exposed Tyvek on the outside (the building appears abandoned, as other guests noted—there’s not even a sign confirming it’s a hotel), no housekeeping, no breakfast, no nothing. And yet Larkin is charging nearly $300 a night? Joe Larkin should be ashamed. How would he like roaches on his toothbrush?

Immediately pulling in, we were concerned. There were no cars in the parking lot, and there was construction happening on the entire front of the building. (Not that big of deal but wish we had known.) The "front desk" girl was very nice, check in was easy. However getting off onto our floor we were smashed in the face with a urine smell. Looked like a huge pee spot right outside the elevator and also smelled like wet dog. We got to out room and the door was open (with the lock) and the windows were wide open. You could just step out onto the ground from our window. It kind of looked like someone may have been laying in the bed. Either way, we did not feel comfortable staying there so we left right away. Again the girl working was very friendly and understanding and we were able to get a partial refund.
