I stayed at Sonesta Austin North a couple of weekends ago while visiting Austin with family and friends. Unfortunately, my experience was far from what I expected, especially as a Sonesta member. From the moment I entered the room, there were issues: the room had an odd smell, the lights at the work desk and sofa bed didn’t work, and the toilet ran constantly. There were no toiletries or toilet paper provided, and I was only given two hand towels and two face towels, I had to specifically ask for regular bath towels. The bed and rugs had a visible stain, the TV had no remote and only displayed snowy channels, and even the peephole was installed upside down so the cover didn’t actually work. I reported all of this to the front desk, but nothing was ever addressed. It was clear I wasn’t the only one experiencing problems, I saw other guests complaining at the front desk throughout my stay. It honestly seemed like this hotel is having ongoing issues across the board. One of the more frustrating surprises was the lack of breakfast. Both the app and hotel listing advertised complimentary breakfast, which was one of the reasons I chose this location. However, no breakfast was available and I wasn’t the only guest unhappy about this. I was also expecting on-site laundry facilities since this is listed as an extended stay hotel, but was told to go to the La Quinta next door instead. The location is accessible from the highway, though it’s in a congested area (which is typical for Austin). My key card had to be reset twice during my 3-day stay, which added to the hassle. On a positive note, the staff were doing what they could — they seemed stressed but not rude. Unfortunately, the sheer number of complaints and their limited ability to help is a bad sign. What really disappointed me most is that I was promised a follow-up from Sonesta corporate and have yet to hear anything back. For $90 a night, I honestly could’ve stayed at a Red Roof Inn and had a more reliable experience. I expected better from the Sonesta brand.
