We stayed at Suimeikan on our second night in Gero after spending the first night at another traditional ryokan (湯之島館), so it was easy for us to notice the differences between the two. Suimeikan is located very close to the train station, which makes it very convenient. You can easily walk there, or take the hotel’s shuttle bus if you have luggage. When you enter the lobby, the space feels very large and impressive. The design is modern but still keeps a touch of traditional Japanese style. The hotel complex consists of three buildings, and each building has its own public bath. This gives guests quite a few options when it comes to enjoying the onsen. You’ll also notice there are often many guests moving around the hotel, which gives the place a lively atmosphere. Overall, the facilities feel quite extensive - there are additional amenities like a gym and swimming pool available for an extra fee. In the evening, the hotel also offers a free live music performance, which we really enjoyed. Among the three baths, one has an outdoor bath while the other two are indoor baths. One of them also has very comfortable heated stone lounge chairs, which I personally loved. Our room was spacious, and the staff also came in to prepare the futon beds on the tatami at night, which made the stay feel very comfortable. For meals, breakfast is served buffet-style with a good variety of options to choose from. Dinner, since we booked the half-board plan, was a traditional sit-down meal. The food was good overall, though personally we felt the dishes at the 湯之島館 were slightly better. Another difference we noticed was the dining setting. At Suimeikan, dinner is served in a shared dining area with other guests, while at 湯之島館each group had their own private dining room, which offered a bit more privacy. Overall, Suimeikan offers a comfortable stay with convenient location and plenty of facilities, making it a great option for enjoying Gero Onsen.

The service was excellent - from the customer service to the rooms and hot springs! There were three hot springs, and I went to all of them, but the open-air bath was the best. The Hida beef steak in the kaiseki cuisine was delicious! It was a great ryokan that I would definitely like to return to when I visit Gero Onsen 👍

The location is very convenient, and the rooms are spacious! There are three pavilions and three hot springs! The breakfast has a wide variety of choices and is delicious! Most importantly, there are Cantonese-speaking staff, which was a pleasant surprise!
