I hardly ever leave bad reviews, but this experience honestly left me so upset that I felt I had to. We came to visit from Durban and were really looking forward to a relaxing weekend, but from the moment we arrived, things went downhill. The woman at reception — the Indian Muslim lady — was extremely rude and unaccommodating. What made it even worse was how uncomfortable and judged she made my partner and me feel simply because we’re two women in a relationship. The way she looked at us and spoke to us made it painfully clear she disapproved. It’s 2025 in Johannesburg — there is absolutely no space for this kind of discrimination or judgement anymore. It’s heartbreaking that people working in hospitality, of all places, can still treat guests this way. Then, we went to have a drink at the bar. There were maybe three other people there, and about six staff members standing around, but our two cocktails took almost half an hour to arrive. When they finally came, they weren’t anything special — and for the prices they charge, that’s just disappointing. To top it all off, it was my wife’s birthday. I had just given her her gift, a camera, and while she was unboxing it, one of the security guards came up to us and told us we weren’t allowed to have a camera — even though it wasn’t even switched on yet. The way he approached us was so unnecessary and rude, it completely killed the moment. This was supposed to be a special evening, and instead it was filled with judgement, poor service, and a complete lack of warmth. I honestly left feeling humiliated and disappointed. Management seriously needs to address how their staff treat LGBTQ+ guests, because no one deserves to feel that kind of hostility — especially when all we did was show up and try to enjoy our stay.
