Great experience. Only lost a star due to construction going on. Which is like, meh, noise was low etc and we did get warned about it when booking and offered a room further away.

This only a review the the Brasserie restaurant as we did not stay at the hotel. We did not have a good experience at the Brasserie at Edgewater. We ordered 2 entrees (the raw fish platter with sashimi, sushi and ika mata, and the local chips), and 2 mains (the deep-sea fish steak and the curry platter. All the items came out together. When we told the waiter we ordered with that entrees and mains should not come out together, he told us it was our fault because we did not tell him not t bring it all out together. The people carrying the food took the mains back to the kitchen. When we ate the entrees, the sashimi was good (raw tuna), although not the best we’ve had on the island. The same with the ika mata (which every restaurant on the island makes, this one was OK, not particularly great), but the sushi was absolutely terrible. The rice was dry and crunch as if it was yesterday’s sushi that had been left in a fried uncovered overnight and dried out. Just terrible. The local chips were very good – a selection of roasted root vegetables and sauces. After we’d finished the entrees and the mains came out again, it was clear on the first bite that it was the same dishes they had originally brought out that had been left in the open. The fish and curry dishes were cold and inedible. Not only that, but no new cutlery was provided, no new napkins and as the curry platter had a soup, no spoon. By this time we had enough and asked to speak to a manager. I have to say that the manager (I think it is Zemu, please forgive me if I got the name wrong) was fantastic. He was very apologetic that all our food had come out at once, that it had been left in the open to get cold and served cold and that our cutlery had not been replaced and was not appropriate for what we had ordered. He arranged for the mains to be cooked fresh and looked after service at our table personally. It felt clear that the majority of the fault for all this was the waiter. From not making sure that entrees and mains came out separately, then blaming us for it, to not replacing cutlery and making sure the cutlery was right for what was ordered to any number of other things (when we asked where he was from and he said Indonesia and we said we had been there last year, he spent 10 minutes telling us about all the family members he had with tours that could get us a good deal and he would put us in touch and showed us photos – all the while, not taking our order to the kitchen). If I had to guess, I couldn’t say if he was just inexperienced, poorly trained, or stoned. There are some things the back of house and not the waiter has to take responsibility for – serving old, cold mains, the crunchy, dry sushi, and the almost alcohol free cocktails (see below). The freshly cooked mains were good – the fish cooked well and tasty with a still fresh from the sea flavour, and the curries were more than acceptable. If that was what had been served to us the first time, after we had finished our entrees, we would have been perfectly happy. Whilst that was good, and things changed after that, it still isn’t a good look that a place like this lets these kinds of things happen. Regardless of all the food coming at once, and the cutlery not being changed, I think serving old, cold, cooked food anywhere is just not acceptable. Separate to this, I will also say that the cocktails were just not up to standard. The pour in a cocktail can range from “is there any alcohol in this?” to “there’s a lot of alcohol in this”. These are definitely on the “is there any?” side. We would have loved to have had more drinks and more food, we just weren’t willing to risk more disappointment. There are so many great dinner options on Rarotonga, and we had such high hopes for the Edgewater, it’s a shame this was the experience we had.
