The Empire Hotel

The Good: I have to give a huge shout-out to the front door staff—they were genuinely friendly, welcoming, and made arrival a breeze. The location is also fantastic; you are right across from Lincoln Center and just steps from Central Park. It is incredibly convenient for getting around the city, with the 1 train at 66th Street and the major hub at Columbus Circle (A, C, B, D, 1) just a short walk away. If you need a base for sightseeing, the position is perfect. The Not-So-Good: However, the rooms themselves were a letdown. I expected them to be small (this is NYC, after all), but the lack of maintenance made the small space feel even more cramped. The room felt tired and neglected—think peeling wallpaper, scuffed furniture, and a general "worn-out" feel that didn't match the lobby. The Verdict: Stay here if you need a convenient place to sleep near Lincoln Center and prioritize staff friendliness and transit access over room quality. But if you plan on spending any real time in your room, be prepared for some wear and tear.

My stay at this hotel was disappointing and did not meet my expectations for the price. At check-in, one front desk staff member was rude, which made the arrival uncomfortable. Later, the staff member who actually checked me in was very kind and professional, which I appreciated. Check-in wasn’t until 3:00 PM, so we had to wait. We chose the 9th floor instead of the 7th specifically for the view. However, once we entered the room, I was shocked by how small it was. The room felt extremely cramped for two double beds, and the bathroom was also very small. Overall, the space did not feel worth the price. There were no trash bags in the room or bathroom upon arrival. When I called housekeeping, they brought very large black trash bags, which didn’t feel appropriate for a hotel room. On the second day, housekeeping cleaned the room well, but the bathroom trash bag was not replaced. On the third day, I asked again for the room to be tidied and trash bags replaced, and I even tipped $10. When we returned, the beds were made, but there were still no trash bags in either bin. I had to call again, and what was brought seemed more like laundry bags. On the first night, there were visible stains on the pillow and blanket, which made me uncomfortable. I requested new bedding for one bed and received it, but this should not have been an issue to begin with. There was also no breakfast offered at this hotel, which was disappointing. On the last day, when I took a shower, there was a very strong, unpleasant smell that made the experience uncomfortable. While the staff was generally responsive when contacted, the overall experience did not meet expectations. For over $150, this room and hotel were simply not worth it. I regret staying here and wish I had booked somewhere else. This was a learning lesson for future trips to New York, and I will definitely research hotels more carefully next time.
