The Highlander

Waited to be served at the carvery for 5 minutes, while the rest of our table were eating. The vegetables from the smorgasbord were almost cold, and my husband's schnitzel didn't come with salad, just chips....it was a bit price pricey, so thought no salad was a bit poor.

My family and I have been coming to the Highlander for a few years now and have always enjoyed it. Tonight though, not so much. While the food was nice, there was a lady who was working who got angry with me and was really rude when I asked to move tables (it was only two of us and the pub was half empty) because we were sitting right near the door, and my little boy said he was cold when the doors were opening. I asked if a certain table was ok, and she spoke to me like I was a idiot saying “no this table is reserved” and I apologized saying I didn’t know as there was a reserve sign on the table. She mumbled something about the menus meaning it was reserved and walked off. She was so rude about it, and left me and my son standing there while she served and seated others. I had to ask her again, where can we sit? She just walked off muttering and not answering me. I’d like to add, I tried to be nice and I wasn’t demanding or rude at all. When she eventually took us to a table she went to take the bread roll on a plate away from my hands and I said “oh I’m still going to eat it” and again she muttered something and walked off. I’m so taken aback by this encounter. It was so unprofessional and needlessly rude. It ruined our experience. And while I’m sure it’s a one off thing, it’s enough to make me not want to come back. I’ve worked in the hospitality industry for years and couldn’t believe it.

Came here for dinner and left with regret. The night started off promising until we were directed to a small table in a spot we didn’t love, despite the venue being far from busy and there being plenty of seating available. When I politely chose a larger, comfier table instead, the waitress's vibe instantly shifted. From that point on, the service from her was noticeably cold and somewhat rude. Apparently choosing where you sit is a criminal offence here. Then came the food. I ordered a beef schnitty, which I didn’t realise could be served rare. The meat was very pink (see photos) and I couldn’t finish it. To top it off, it didn’t even come with a salad, just chips. The chips, to be fair, were actually good. Not long after, I felt unwell, which is not exactly the post-dinner experience you hope for. It’s a shame, because the venue itself has potential. But between the frosty service over a non-issue and a schnitzel that looked more at home on a steak menu, I won’t be rushing back.
