I booked this hotel while travelling from the Stena Line terminal at Cairnryan. The journey takes over three hours, and delays are common, so I informed the hotel immediately and offered to provide photo ID so they could leave a key securely for me. They refused any form of late check-in — no key box, no door code, no alternative solution of any kind. Even the smallest rural inns in Scotland manage this without issue, but here I received a blunt refusal and no effort to help. I understand policies, but hospitality also requires basic flexibility and customer care. This was handled poorly and far below the standard I’m used to across Scotland. I’m not angry anymore, but an honest review of how this was dealt with is worth more than the cost of the room they chose to keep. Dear Owner, Your response only reinforces the problem. I contacted you as soon as I realised I might arrive outside your check-in window — a delay that is completely normal on the three-hour drive from the Cairnryan ferry. I offered photo ID and asked for any reasonable solution: a key box, a code, a secure handover, anything. Every other small hotel and rural inn we work with across Scotland manages this without issue. You, however, refused every option outright. There was no flexibility, no attempt at problem-solving, and no interest in helping a guest who was doing everything possible to communicate clearly. Hiding behind “policy” is not hospitality — it’s simply refusing to accommodate. As for your claim that I insulted your staff: that is not true. I called your policies “retarded” because they are outdated, unnecessarily rigid, and completely out of step with how modern accommodation operates. At no point did I direct that wording at a person. Your attempt to twist this into a personal insult is dishonest and only highlights how poorly this was handled. Your comparison to ferry operators is irrelevant. Ferries run on fixed timetables. Hotels, on the other hand, routinely make late-arrival arrangements when notified — because that’s what reasonable hospitality looks like. The fact that you refuse to do what even the smallest independent properties manage daily is telling. My review reflects the reality of the situation: you were inflexible, dismissive, and showed no interest in providing a workable solution for a paying guest. The cost of the room is irrelevant — it’s the attitude and the complete lack of customer care that prompted my feedback. If this is the standard you consider acceptable, the issue is far bigger than a late check-in.

Our first time here and certainly won't be last. It is a quirky place, room was quaint, restaurant was even more quaint. Staff were excellent, helpful and kind. Food was excellent and well presented, breakfast was excellent with a great choice to choose from. Would certainly recommend it.
