I stayed recently at The Mantissa Hotel and it absolutely nails the boutique hotel experience. Stylish, comfortable, and right in the heart of downtown Hartsville, it feels like the hotel is part of the community - not just sitting in it. The rooftop bar is a must — great vibe, great energy, and clearly a local gathering spot as much as a guest perk. What really stands out is the people. The General Manager is excellent — professional, warm, and clearly proud of the team and the hotel. I met front desk staff and a housekeeper during my stay, and everyone was friendly, engaged, and genuinely seemed to enjoy working there and with each other. That kind of culture shows. This place feels led by the people who are there every day, and proud to be at the center of it all. Highly recommend.

I saw a bed bug crawling on my bed during the second night of my stay. I immediately called the front desk to ask to change rooms and they told me that my room type was not available. I explained that I didn’t care which room type I was in, but that I did not want to sleep in a room with bed bugs. They did end up moving me to another room, but offered no other solutions or help. The apology was lackluster and when I mentioned it again to a different front desk attendant when I checked out that I had changed rooms due to bed bugs, I got no apology, concern, and he didn’t acknowledge the issue at all. My entire stay was very disappointing and inconvenient. The pictures don’t look like the rooms and they clearly don’t seem to clean the rooms very well.

It was a nice hotel, but when I first checked in, I was given the impression that I got the last room available. I was there on business. I was put into a handicap room on the first floor as a single female staying there by myself. There was not a lot of room in the shower as it was stocked full of equipment for people who needed it. There was mold in the corners of the shower. I was there by myself and was not familiar with this company, so I felt uncomfortable saying anything and had to clean it myself. They advertise Sleep Number beds, but noone told me how to use it and there were no instructions. It was old. The remote had tape holding the batteries in, and it never worked properly. The walls are very thin, and staying on the bottom floor, you definitely do not want to stay during a popular time because my room faced the restaurant across the way, and it was loud. It says full kitchen, but there was only one fork in the drawer, and there were no storage containers for food. So, when I checked out, I mentioned that I did not appreciate that I was put into a handicap room, as it could have been used for someone who needed it. They said that they would only do that it was requested. I checked with my work, and they would not have requested that. Please communicate better.
