We really wanted to love The Portswood given its prime location, but after our stay, we are left wondering how this is rated as a 4-star hotel. In our opinion, this is definitely a 3-star experience at best. The Good: The location is the biggest selling point—it is extremely safe and a stone's throw from the V&A Waterfront. The restaurant service was pleasant, and Ashley at the front door was an absolute standout. Every day he was kind, warm, and genuinely nice. He is the standard of what hospitality should be. The Bad (Service & Atmosphere): Unfortunately, Tamlyn at the front desk was a complete contrast. Her approach was cold, robotic, and totally unpersonalized. There was no eye contact or 'hello,' just a demand for passports. She is the face of the hotel, and her attitude was so off-putting that we actually declined the hotel breakfast—we simply didn't want to spend more time in an environment that felt so unwelcome. Furthermore, the room doors are incredibly loud. They slam constantly, and the no one don’t seem to make any effort to close them gently, making it very difficult to sleep. The Unacceptable (Cleanliness & Facilities): The most disturbing part was the cleanliness of the room. The surfaces appeared clean at first glance, but when we wiped a countertop with a damp towel, it came up brown. We actually had to go out and buy our own cleaning supplies to scrub the glass and surfaces ourselves. For a 4-star hotel, having to clean your own room is inexcusable. Also, while there is a pool, be warned: it is ice-cold and completely uncomfortable to use. Final Verdict: If you want a safe spot near the V&A, the location is great. But between the robotic service from Tamlyn and the lack of basic housekeeping, this is a 3-star hotel with 4-star branding. Thank you to Ashley for being the one bright spot in our stay!
