Had a lovely stay at the Samuel Ryder Hotel in St Albans! Check-in was easy and super friendly. The room was brilliant and spacious, however the coffee machine barely functioned, the electrics for the lights were wired incorrectly making it hard to turn off the right lights with different switches, and the room was absolutely filled with dust, we think from the vents. The bed was extremely comfy, though, and it was lovely and quiet. Would stay again if in the area!

Stayed here as a stop before travelling on elsewhere the next day, to break up the journey. Hotel was easy enough to find, right in the town just down the hill from shops and restaurants. The rooms are modern, clean, and well designed. There are USB sockets and plug sockets next to the bed, a nicely decorated bathroom (if small) and a well functioning aircon/ heating unit. The bed was comfortable enough but on the firmer side, something to bear in mind depending on your preferences. The water pressure in the bathroom is good, shower heats quickly and everything was clean. The in room amenities are a bit of a mixed bag. Good sized towels, biscuits, tea, and coffee, a small but functional ironing board and a modern TV. However, no fridge, no wardrobe doors (all open to save space) and no things such as shower cap etc in the bathroom. Even so, rooms are well appointed and we were happy with the room. If this matters to you, I have Diamond status with Hilton and this is part of the brand. This wasn't acknowledged at check in, no upgrade was given (or discussed), no welcome pack, drink or anything similar. A gap IMO as the hotel was clearly not full. Worth noting that these small boutique hotels (such as Tapestry, some others) don't often have gyms/ fitness centres. Difficult in the space so just flagging rather than noting for complaint. Breakfast was very poor. You pay (as diamond free) as a guest £18.95 for a continental breakfast. This is the singular worst selection of continental breakfast at that price point I have ever seen. There were croissants, vegan raspberry croissants, cinnamon swirls, and almond croissants. Toaster with a selection of white or brown bread a one or two breads you could slice. There were a few ready made up overnight oats, yoghurt pots and similar. Two coffee machines. Some bananas and oranges, 4 boxes of cereals and milk. No meats. No eggs. No cheese. No different types or yoghurts. No option for plain yoghurt. Then, anything hot dishes were charged at £5 each supplement. Imagine paying £18.95 for that selection. Further, the room was freezing. There were people eating in full coats. What this also meant was that your coffee or hot food was cold in minutes. This was a poor experience overall, which is a shame. The parking is another slight challenge but it is free. There is one very small attached carpark which you drive through, inevitably can't park in, pull into a one car exit to hop out and drop your bags. You're then given a pass for one of two other (free) car parks. 1 is a very short walk away (2 or 3 minutes) and the other a bit further. The staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel itself is beautiful. A lovely building and nice rooms.
