Unfortunately, I have to downgrade my previous 5-star review from last year. We returned to this hotel because we enjoyed it so much last year. This time, we were caught off guard. In 30 years of booking package holidays, I've never had to pay a deposit. It does happen that you "leave" a credit card, but the hotel doesn't charge anything. However, in this case, €100 was supposed to be debited directly. This incurs additional costs, and the money was supposedly due three days after departure. We simply paid in cash, but they wouldn't give us a receipt, so we took a photo of it. The crazy thing is, when we left, they didn't even check the room; they returned the €100 to us anyway. Furthermore, they had absolutely no idea about our booking details, and we had to argue with the tour manager that our breakfast was included. For breakfast, they supposedly tell you that you choose a meal and get a drink with it. Everything else has to be paid for separately; two slices of toast cost €4.50. What shocked us most was that breakfast is served in the pub, as the owner is converting the beautiful café into additional guest rooms. This is precisely why we chose the hotel, as the café offers a wonderful view of the sea. The terrace was therefore also unusable. There was no other option, as the room that was advertised to us last year as a TV, reading, and lounge is being converted into another guest room. The only thing that matters here is making money; the whole atmosphere is gone. We complained about the toilet not flushing properly on the day we arrived, but it wasn't even repaired. The room was more or less fine, the heater was full of dust. The furniture had scratches, dents, and stains everywhere. We took photos of all these, of course, in case someone tried to blame us. There's a very strange energy in this house; you definitely don't feel at home. The friendliness has also diminished, or rather, it couldn't be detected. We're awarding the only star for the fantastic cuisine. This hotel knows how to alienate its guests. It's a shame, because we felt so comfortable last year.

Checked in to the Strand today. When we arrived we asked about our ability to check in early. We were told no, not until 4pm. We arrived back at 6:15 pm. Upon check in we were required to do a room deposit on a pre paid room. Okay, so everyone wants to play the game and get extra cash off of the investment from ‘security deposits’. I had booked our room through an online booking service. With every booking during our stay through Ireland, I have noted my husbands mobility disability and simply ask for a lower level room. This one claims they help with luggage…good thing we had downsized to our backpacks at this point in our journey as the room we were assigned is up 4 flights of stairs. No help offered with luggage…so we make the slow journey upwards to our room. Once inside the discernible smell of ‘poo’ was most evident. The room has marks across the carpet. I told my husband to wait while I ran back downstairs to share the unacceptable nature of our room on two levels…accessibility and cleanliness. Spoke with the gentleman at the front desk who called someone. He handed me the phone. I spoke with that gentleman to provide context for my ask to be moved to a different room. A back and forth with our front desk gentleman, and the man on the phone told me that they were all full for the night and no other rooms were available. So long and short. Don’t book here! Don’t stay here!
