The Westin Miyako Kyoto is a beautiful, high-end hotel with spacious, well-appointed rooms and excellent amenities. The property itself is serene and luxurious, and on the surface it delivers the elevated experience you’d expect from a Westin. However, there were a few notable drawbacks that affected our stay. First, the service—while well-intentioned—often felt excessive. At the breakfast buffet, staff hovered constantly, asking if we needed help every minute while we were simply trying to look around and choose food. Attentiveness is appreciated, but this level of hovering became intrusive and uncomfortable. Another frustrating moment occurred at the dinner buffet when we attempted to take a small amount of popcorn back to our room. This was made into a surprisingly big issue and ultimately not allowed, which felt unnecessarily rigid for a luxury hotel. The biggest disappointment, however, was the experience in the Executive Lounge. The manager, Mr. Maketa, was extremely rude and unwelcoming. I entered the lounge briefly to grab a coffee, fully dressed and wearing the hotel-provided slippers. I had even seen another guest—who was Japanese—wearing the same slippers. Despite this, Mr. Maketa made a snide remark implying I was not allowed to enter the lounge in slippers. As an Ambassador member with Marriott Bonvoy, I expect a basic level of respect and understanding as a loyal, returning guest. Additionally, his behavior throughout our time in the lounge felt uncomfortable—hovering and watching us while we ate, which is not normal and creates an unpleasant atmosphere. Overall, the hotel itself is lovely and could be an excellent stay, but the overly intrusive service and unprofessional behavior from certain staff members significantly detracted from the experience. Avoiding these issues—particularly in the Executive Lounge—would greatly improve the stay. For these reasons, I am giving this hotel one star. True hospitality is about making guests feel welcome and comfortable—something that was unfortunately lacking during my stay.
