The scenery is beautiful, the staff is very friendly, and the service is excellent

Ubuya is wonderfully located on Lake Kawaguchi, offering an unbeatable view and easy access with a bus stop right at the entrance. The hotel has an authentic Japanese ambiance with beautiful décor, and the public onsen overlooking Mount Fuji is a definite highlight. While many of the staff were welcoming — especially in the restaurant, onsen, and housekeeping — our experience with the front desk and souvenir store staff was notably less friendly. Despite several bellboys stationed at the entrance, guests are expected to carry their own luggage to the lobby, which felt quite unusual given the typical warmth of Japanese hospitality. Throughout our stay, the front desk staff seemed indifferent, offering minimal smiles and, at times, making it feel as though our questions in English were unwelcome. This was disappointing as paying guests. A particularly challenging moment occurred upon departure. We were a large group with young children, strollers, and multiple pieces of luggage. Unfortunately, on a rainy day, the front desk declined to assist us with arranging a taxi to our next hotel just 10 minutes away, instead suggesting we take a public bus. It was surprising that no alternative solutions were offered, as we had hoped for a bit more consideration in such a situation. Ubuya has so much potential, and while most of the team members were kind, the lack of attentiveness and warmth from certain front-line staff was disappointing, especially given the hotel’s price range and overall reputation. Improved training in customer care would undoubtedly enhance the experience, ensuring every guest feels truly valued.
