Coastal Expeditions on Shem Creek

Once you check in at Coastal Expeditions, your guides will prepare your group for the adventure by fitting your gear and offering a brief safety and instruction on how to sea kayak. Once we're on the water, we'll take a minute to get our "sea legs" before we paddle down towards the historic portion of Shem Creek and Charleston Harbor. We will return to this point at the end of the tour.

Shem Creek Park

Historic Shem Creek is one of the most iconic spots in Charleston and is known for its shrimp boats, seafood restaurants and wildlife. Bottlenose dolphins frequent this creek and will often breach just feet away from your kayak. In the summers, manatees call Shem Creek home and loggerhead turtles will occasionally pop above the surface. As you pass by the shrimp boats and oyster-lined marshes, you see Charleston Harbor and the Holy City Skyline. The Netflix show Outer Banks films on Shem Creek and your guide can show you familiar places where Pogues hang out!

Both our guides, Morgan & Tate were like Disney tour guides of the water & wildlife. Very organized, they kept everyone together and safe and added lots of info about the Dolphins, birdlife and the inlet & harbor. Well done.

This was a scouting trip for next time we have friends and family visiting. Tour guide Abbi is... well, awesome. She knows so much and is really good with kids. This is a big deal: getting out to a barrier island is way better than visiting the popular beaches around the Charleston area. Coastal Expeditions make it very safe and user friendly for old and young. You can just relax on the harbor side, or walk around to the ocean side of the island for an entirely different experience. If you're willing to walk further you'll have a long stretch of beach all to yourself. Bring a snack and a water bottle. Bring comfortable shoes that can get wet and sandy. A hat and sunglasses are a must. If you like taking pictures you'll be loving the whole adventure.

A wonderful, peaceful, easy paddling family experience in a beautiful area. Tate our guide and his crew were wonderful, knowledgeable and handled 18 kayakers like pros! We learned about the wildlife in our sights, the estuary and even got to see a dolphin peacefully gliding through the creek. It was a beautiful evening to watch the sunset with the Arthur Ravenel Bridge in the distance. Lots of fantastic photo ops too!

My son came into town for visit. We took the guided kayak tour and it was the best. Our guide was very knowledgeable and very patient with the whole group. We were able to see group of dolphins and some turtles. We learned of man-made Island. The whole crew were great preparing us and giving safety information..I would definitely do this again!

Claire was the most helpful and dedicated caring guide Evwr! The young lady had to tow one couple behind her 3/4 of the trip. She also kept a keen eye on everyone in the group. She made my granddaughter and I feel so comfortable and secure. She is a gem and you are blessed to have her in your outfit! We were blessed to have her with us. Thank you Claire stay awesome!
