Musee de l’Orangerie

Situated in the beautifully manicured Tuileries Gardens, the Orangerie transformed into a museum in the early 20th century when Paris’s over-crowded museums needed new galleries. The Orangerie most famously houses the series of various waterlilies Monet granted to France thanks to his friendship with George Clemenceau, which earned their own private gallery space. The expansive collection of 19th century and early 20th century paintings features works by other famous Impressionists and those who came after. View Cezanne’s studies of fruits and flowers, seductive portraits by Matisse, and various phases of Picasso’s career through several nudes. Other artists including Modigliani, Renoir, and Utrillo, all make the Orangerie a must-visit for anyone who appreciates French art and the Impressionist movement.

The only way to do a museum tour so you leave being more intelligent and have a deeper appreciation not just for the art, but for the stories around the art. We were beyond fortunate to have our tour guide named Sunday who was far over qualified for the job. Luckily, she loves sharing her academia with us and does so in the quirkiest and delightful way. We didn’t have any curiosities left unsaid because she dove deep into the artist, their work, the style, the cultural history and the impact for each section. I left there feeling as if I could be an art lover and contribute to art conversations which is the greatest gift a guide could leave us. We wore one ear headsets to hear and that was so so helpful as there were areas a little more crowded and if you’ve ever been to Paris you know this place is quiet! I am grateful we did L’Orangerie and have this experience as our Paris memory forever.

Fabulous. Our tour guide, Michele, was in contact with me before the tour. He was on time, spoke English fluently, and had a great working knowledge of the material at the museum. Michele was also friendly, warm and kind. He thoughtfully answered all questions, and also gave us time to experience the water lilies. A+ experience.

It was a wonderful tour… Hugo did a great job telling us stories of the period which really made the art come alive. There are a number of great works of art on the lower level with the Water Lilies featured on the main level.

For the first time in my life I have an appreciation for art. Our guide, Marcel, explained artwork in a way that gave me an appreciation for the sacrifices and challenges faced by artists, the differences in their techniques, and the meanings behind the paintings. My wife recently began painting and I knew she would be enthralled by the visit to the museum, but I found myself really enjoying this tour and I don't understand why more people don't visit this gem of a museum with an interesting history of its own. I enjoyed this tour more than I did my tours of the Louvre and Orsay.

Our experience with our guide, Mich, at L’Orangerie was OUTSTANDING! He was so kind, so knowledgeable and his insights that he shared about all of the artists, especially, or I thought provoking. Mich was so well prepared for our visit. It was obvious he had studied these incredible artist, and he knew so much about them! We will never forget our wonderful tour with Mich at L’Orangerie. It was truly the highlight of our trip to Paris!

Anatole was our favorite tour guide that we’ve had all week - both my husband and I remarked how much we learned about L’Orangerie and the art works there thanks to him, as well as how pleasant he was. The museum itself is a very manageable size too. We would definitely recommend this tour and tour guide to anyone and would book again!

Sandy was wonderful! Lighthearted and knowledgeable of art history. I would do another tour with her if I could choose my guide! Edward Luker
