Your Itinerary

Miradouro Pico Dos Barcelos

You will start your tour at Belvedere. Pico dos Barcelos has an observation point on the edge of Funchal, it is 355m (1165 ft). There’s a magnificent view across Funchal from the top of the viewpoint, at which you will stop for about 15 minutes.

Miradouro Eira do Serrado

You will then head to Eira do Serrado, overlooking “Curral das Freiras” a horse shoe shaped valley far below. The Views have three sheer sides that cut into the serrated peaks of Madeira. Here, Madeira’s highest mountain was mistakenly believed to have been a volcanic crater. It is now known that its dramatic geographical shape was created by the river itself. From there, you can admire the tiny terraced fields which grow wine, fruit and vegetables and the slopes far below with sweet chestnut trees. You will stop there for around 30 minutes.

Valley of the Nuns

Next, you will venture forth to the Village of Nuns Valley - Curral das Freiras. The valley is situated in a huge natural amphitheater, surrounded by some of Madeira’s highest peaks. The village was founded in the 16th century by the nuns of the convent of “Santa Clara” in Funchal, from where the nuns fled from pirate attacks in 1566. The center of the village is situated on a small rise in the middle of the valley. You will stop there for about 30 minutes

George our guide and all the viewing points. Highly recommended. Good to learn the history which makes the tour very interesting.

This tour was amazing. We were picked up at our hotel and the tour guide was lovely. She explained about a lot of things on the way up and back down the mountain. At the second stop with the cafe she sat with my elderly father on the cafe balcony while I walked up to the view point. She told us interesting facts about banana trees. The views we saw were amazing and we enjoyed visiting the Valley of the Nuns village chapel. This is a great tour to do and just right for someone elderly.

The unbelievable sights all along the way. The tour guide Suzana was the best tour guide I have ever seen, she was very knowledgeable, pleasant and helpful.

Nuns Valley half day tour's guide Manuel was straight in with information on Maderia after picking up the last clients. Perfect 3.hours / 3 short stops. Amazing scenery, beautiful beautiful Nuns valley despite the weather.

Very friendly. On time. In fact it started early as I was the last pick up and I was ready to go when they arrived. Suited me perfectly as I had an afternoon excursion booked. Minibus was comfortable and the guide friendly and answered any questions. Views are stunning as the pictures show. Perfect if you want to see multiple places in a few hours. 40 min stops along the way. Good enough for me. Can't complain.

There were NO views due to the area closed in fog/clouds. You could not see anything. Total white out from the solid white mist and cloudes.

Our guide was very nice gentleman, he was very patient. The tour was wonderful. We will go again, once we visit Madeira.

Stunning! (Also noteworthy of a visit to experience the narrow and winding Madeiran roads up to Nuns Valley.)

The views and stops were nice, but we didn’t realize 3 hours included pickup and drop off times for other guests. We were the first pickup and had to wait in a hot van for a half hour or more with no communication from the driver to pick up the second guests. Then even though we were directly behind the driver his commentary wasn’t always understood and not worth asking him to constantly repeat himself. As mentioned, the stops and views were beautiful, but it could have been closer to 3 hours without including the time to make 4 or more pickup stops as advertised. Please note that I contacted the tour operator before leaving my review and they blamed Viator for the 3 hour tour time (which makes no sense) and they only made poor excuses about our half hour or more wait in the van with no air conditioning or communication from the driver. I was going to rate this three stars, but the tour operator’s response unfortunately made me lower it to two stars.

This is a great option when you don’t want to spend the whole day on a tour. It’s a 3hrs trip around Nun’s valley with great stops to explore. Very relaxing and not difficult for walking. Fatima was a great guide.
