Your Itinerary

Funchal

Your private tour begins with the transfer from the hotel or apartment in my UMM (open classic ex-army Portuguese jeep - it has a cover also for all weather conditions). Get ready to be amazed by panoramic views and explore the heart of nature, while learning all about Madeira's traditions and history, always away from the typical “tourist routes”. You will have the opportunity of riding in a very relaxed safari-style tour, going to places that you just have to see! We`ll take you off the beaten track, whenever possible, through old roads & off-road, in really remote places, hidden valleys and villages lost in the mountains, so you can see the wild beauty of the island, all done in a very calm safe and relaxed way. Along our route we will stop at all the good photo opportunities, on an exciting open jeep ride, enjoying various experiences, awakening all your senses. In this tour we will visit the coastal region and hidden villages in the mountains of Câmara de Lobos

Estreito de Camara de Lobos

we will go to places you never imagined could exist, we will see the REAL MADEIRA, where most people live... enter the rugged mountains and valleys, passing through the wine region of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos. Along the way (ancient paths), up the hill, we will make several stops for photos or explanations, being able to contemplate a fantastic scenery of banana trees or vineyards (this route seems painted in green or bronze). The vines testify to the deep relationship between man and nature, in a communion of hard but beautiful work. Stopping in all the good photo opportunities, always in a relaxed atmosphere, far from the beaten track. After we keep going up to Faja das Galinhas viewpoint (700m) with an amazing view, where we will make another stop (15m) The vines testify to the deep relationship between man and nature, in a communion of hard but beautiful work.

Estreito de Camara de Lobos

On the our way we will make some stops to visit banana and vine plantations

Miradouro da Boca dos Namorados

From here we will be able to see Curral das Freiras (Nuns Valley), a village nestled on one of the many volcanic craters, which originated the Island. The village is so named as it is believed that it was the place chosen by a group of nuns to take shelter from the attacks of pirates and corsairs. The warning of an unforgettable trip that, at this point, is done through off-road trails towards Jardim da Serra (coffee stop), land of cherries and chestnut trees, a journey of the senses as the intense perfumes (fragrant mimosa and eucalyptus) of the forest and the utter calmness of the cultivated fields overwhelms us.

Jardim da Serra

After off-road, we will make a stop at a very local place for a drink or toilet (Coffee Break), where you can taste a homemade Madeira wine or a Poncha (Drinks not included). But just to give you an idea, the price of the poncha can vary between € 2.00 and € 2.50, depending on the location of our stop This town is characterized by a fertile land of cherries. It is the only place on the island where this red fruit exists and that is why every year a festival, which attracts thousands of visitors, is celebrated in his honor.

Henriques & Henriques

After coffee break and crossing all the cherry and chestnut plantations, we will do another off-road where we will have to cross the vineyards of a company called Henrique & Henriques, located on the top of the mountain, where we will be able to contemplate wonderful landscapes.

Cabo Girao

Cabo Girão, Europe’s highest sea cliff, with its 580mts of altitude hanging over the ocean. This is a perfect spot to admire the diversity of the natural beauty of the island. After that, we will descend until finally reaching the blue sea, with the colorful boats typical of Câmara de Lobos, that rest of the fishing. Along the way, we will cross several plantations, where we can see several tropical fruits, mixed with sugar cane, banana trees, etc. We will make several stops for photos.

Camara De Lobos

At our next stop, we can take a short walk and observe the village of Câmara de Lobos from a different perspective.

What a great way to see Madeira! Miguel is an incredible guide. From the initial contact he was prompt, courteous and informative. We thoroughly enjoyed spending our afternoon with him. We’d highly recommend booking a tour.

We had a great experience! Miguel was super informative and showed us the most scenic and beautiful views of Funchal’s mountains, sea cliffs, and Nun’s Valley. Miguel really takes the time to teach you about the island and takes you places others don’t typically go. He took us off-roading to show us the lavadas and took the time to show us the various fruits and vegetables grown in the areas. One of my favorite parts was when we stopped by the village bar and he had us try the local drinks; we were able to see how homemade ponchas are made and they are incredibly tasty! Miguel also took time to take photos of us with the beautiful views. We also visited the skywalk and the fishing boats in Camara de Lobos. I highly recommend Miguel. He really personalized our tour and it was absolutely fantastic! We highly recommend him.

Beautiful insight into Madeira’s heart, banana plantations, breathtaking views and much more. Thank you Miguel!

Wow, what an experience! Miguel is so knowledgeable on the culture, vegetation and way of life in Madeira. We watched a local make the traditional poncho and got to taste test it. I loved walking through the banana plantations and under the grape vine canapies. He took us to some amazing lookouts, away from the tourist hotspots. We saw the real Madeira and how the locals live up in the mountains...coupled with some off road 4 x 4 driving made it such a fun experience. Well worth the time and money

A great tour. Miguel was very knowledgable and explained at the start what we'd be doing. One moment we'd be on a main road, the next down a local back street or off-roading. We saw so many fruits and saw some of the levanda walks which we'd like to do in future Some great local knowledge and recommendations for lunch. We stopped at a local bar for coffee and some pontcha which was a lot nicer than what we'd tried before. The tour was in an old Portuguese army jeep which added the the experienced and definitely needed for the sharp inclines and off roading. Miguel often stopped to show us the vines or gardens with multiple crops growing. Miguel was friendly and a great tour guide. Would recommend and would do a longer tour, earlier in our holiday next time.

Absolutely fantastic tour. Saw plenty of areas we would never have seen in Madeira otherwise. Miguel was a very hospitable host always willing to answer questions and give plenty of information about everywhere we went great views not on the main tourist route and a little bit of off-roading thrown in for good measure. I’d def suggest Miguel is far better and personable than your run of the mill mainstream tours.

This was our 4th jeep trip with Miguel. He always delivers with an exciting ride viewing parts of Madeira that you don’t normally see. He is personable and is a great guide. I consider him a friend!

We had a great morning discovering Funchal and the surrounding mountains and valleys. Miguel was a wonderful host full of knowledge of not only the flora and fauna but also the culture and history of the area. Taking time to ensure we explored the highs of the mountains and the lows of the valleys, explaining the history of levadas and making sure we were able to experience the foods and drinks native to this beautiful island. We highly recommend you see Madeira with Miguel!!!

Miguel was wonderful, taking us to spots around the island that were off the beaten path. He also did his best to stay off the highways and to drive through the narrow and steep hills of Madeira. Overall, he was very knowledgable and friendly. I just wished we had more time to spend with him.
