Opened to the public in 1968, it is one of the most important in Calabria. The building, designed by the architect Franco Minissi, is located on one of the bastions of the sixteenth-century walls, a stone's throw from the Castle of Charles V, in the historic center of the city.

Among the most famous sacred areas of the entire Mediterranean basin, the famous Heraion Lakinion revolved around the majestic sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Hera Lacinia, in Doric style with a rectangular plan of 6x19 columns, dating back to the 5th century BC. Today only one surviving column with stylobate remains of the temple.
