The crisp Finnish air nipped at my cheeks as I stepped off the train in Inari, a small village nestled in the heart of Sápmi, the Sámi homeland. This wasn't just another stop on my travel itinerary; it was a pilgrimage of sorts, a chance to connect with a culture I'd long admired and a language I was slowly, painstakingly, learning: Sámi.

Why Sámi?

My journey to learning Sámi wasn't a sudden decision. Growing up in Alaska, surrounded by the vast wilderness and rich indigenous cultures, instilled in me a deep respect for the power of language and its connection to heritage. My interest in Nordic mythology led me to Finland, and eventually, to the Sámi people. I was captivated by their traditions, their deep connection to the land, and the unique beauty of their languages. It felt like a calling, a way to honor my own Nordic roots and contribute to the preservation of a vibrant culture.

The Sámi are the indigenous people of Sápmi, an area spanning parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Their languages – there are several distinct Sámi languages – are integral to their cultural identity. For centuries, the Sámi have faced pressure to assimilate, including the suppression of their languages. Today, revitalization efforts are underway, but the future of these languages depends on continued support and recognition. Learning Sámi, for me, is a small act of solidarity, a way to show respect and contribute to this vital preservation effort.

The Power of Language in Cultural Immersion

I've always believed that language is more than just a tool for communication; it's a gateway to understanding a culture's soul. Even knowing a few basic phrases can transform your travel experiences. Instead of being a mere observer, you become a participant, an active learner. On that trip to Inari, greeting a local reindeer herder with a simple “Buorre beaivi” (Good day) sparked a conversation that led to an invitation to visit his family's reindeer enclosure. {image1}

Through the Sámi language, I've gained insights into traditions, stories, and the Sámi worldview. The language is intrinsically linked to the natural world, with rich vocabulary describing different types of snow, reindeer, and landscapes. Understanding these nuances has deepened my appreciation for the Sámi's profound connection to their environment.

Challenges and Rewards of Learning Sámi

Learning Sámi is not without its challenges. Resources can be scarce, and finding opportunities for practice can be difficult, especially outside of Sápmi. I've relied heavily on online courses, language exchange partners, and the occasional immersion trip to northern Finland. One resource I found particularly helpful was the Anarâškielâ säämi máttáámtieki (Inari Sámi language nest), a language immersion program for children that also offers resources for adult learners.

Despite the difficulties, the rewards have been immense. Not only have I gained a deeper understanding of Sámi culture, but I've also experienced personal growth. Learning a new language pushes you outside of your comfort zone, challenges your assumptions, and opens your mind to new perspectives. Plus, as a librarian specializing in Arctic and Nordic literature, my Sámi language skills have allowed me to access and appreciate a whole new realm of stories and knowledge. My husband, Markus, has been incredibly supportive, even attempting a few phrases himself!

Sámi Language Today

Today, the Sámi languages face an uncertain future. According to recent estimates, there are only a few thousand speakers of the various Sámi languages combined. However, there's a growing movement to revitalize the languages and promote their use in all aspects of life. Sámi musicians are incorporating traditional joiks (a traditional form of Sámi song) into contemporary music, Sámi filmmakers are telling their own stories, and Sámi educators are working to ensure that future generations have the opportunity to learn their ancestral languages. For example, the Sámi Parliament in Finland actively supports language revitalization projects.

The historical context of language suppression is crucial to understanding the current situation. For decades, Sámi children were forbidden from speaking their languages in schools, leading to a decline in fluency and intergenerational transmission. Recognizing this injustice and working to reverse its effects is essential for the survival of the Sámi languages.

Resources for Aspiring Sámi Language Learners

If you're interested in learning Sámi, there are several resources available to get you started:

  • Online Courses: Giellatekno at the University of Tromsø offers online resources for learning Northern Sámi.
  • Language Exchange Apps: Tandem and HelloTalk can connect you with native Sámi speakers for language exchange.
  • Cultural Centers: The Sámi Cultural Centre Sajos in Inari, Finland, offers language courses and cultural events.
  • Books and Music: Look for children's books, music albums, and films in Sámi to immerse yourself in the language.

    Learning Sámi is an ongoing journey, but it's one that has enriched my life in countless ways. It's opened my eyes to a unique culture, deepened my connection to the natural world, and given me a sense of purpose. If you're looking for a travel experience that goes beyond the surface, I encourage you to consider learning a few phrases in the local language, especially if you're visiting an indigenous community. You might be surprised at the connections you make and the stories you uncover. Maybe I'll see you in Inari someday!
