As a Maldivian now living in Toronto, I've learned that traveling with family is an adventure in itself. Our son, Ibrahim, has taught my wife and me the importance of keeping things engaging on the road. Here are some strategies we've found invaluable for ensuring everyone enjoys the journey.

Planning and Preparation: Setting the Stage for Success

One of the best ways to kick off a trip is by getting everyone involved right from the start. We always make sure Ibrahim has a say in where we're going and what we'll be doing. This builds excitement and gives him a sense of ownership over the adventure. We sit down together and look at pictures and videos of our destination, talking about the cool things we might see and do. This also gives us a chance to manage expectations – explaining how long the journey might be or what kind of weather to expect.

Another trick we've found helpful is packing a 'surprise bag'. This is filled with small, inexpensive toys, books, or activities that we reveal at different points during the trip. It's a great way to break up long stretches of travel and keep boredom at bay.

Travel Games and Activities: Turning Travel Time into Fun Time

No family trip is complete without a few classic travel games. 'I Spy' is always a hit, and we've adapted the license plate game to include finding plates from different provinces or states. 20 Questions is another favorite that keeps us entertained for hours. These games are simple but effective in passing the time.

We've also put a travel twist on popular games like Bingo and scavenger hunts. Before we leave, we create Bingo cards with things we might see along the way – a red car, a cow, a specific road sign. For scavenger hunts, we make a list of items to find at rest stops or landmarks. These adaptations make familiar games feel new and exciting.

Storytelling games are another fun way to engage everyone's imagination. We start a story with a sentence or two, and then each person adds to it, building a collaborative tale. It's amazing how creative and hilarious these stories can become.

Educational Engagement: Learning on the Go

Travel is a fantastic opportunity for learning, and we try to incorporate educational elements into our trips. We download educational apps and audiobooks related to our destination or general knowledge. For instance, before visiting a historical site, we might listen to an audiobook about its history.

We also encourage Ibrahim to keep a travel journal. He documents his experiences, draws pictures, and collects small mementos like ticket stubs or postcards. It's a wonderful way for him to reflect on his travels and create lasting memories.

Of course, visiting family-friendly attractions is a must. Museums, zoos, and historical sites offer hands-on learning experiences that are both fun and educational. We always look for interactive exhibits and guided tours that cater to children.

Creative Outlets: Unleashing Imagination on the Road

To keep Ibrahim's creative juices flowing, we always pack art supplies. Coloring books, crayons, and sketchpads are essential. He loves drawing what he sees out the window or creating his own travel-themed artwork.

Travel-sized magnetic building tiles or LEGO sets are also great for creative construction. They're easy to pack and provide hours of entertainment. Ibrahim can build anything he imagines, from cars and airplanes to towering castles.

We also bring along travel-themed books to spark imagination and learning. These books might feature stories about different cultures, historical events, or exciting adventures. They're a great way to introduce new ideas and inspire curiosity.

Snacks and Comfort: The Power of Simple Pleasures

Let's be honest – a well-fed child is a happy child. We always pack a variety of healthy and enjoyable snacks to keep energy levels up. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, and homemade treats are our go-to options.

We also make sure to include a favorite comfort item, such as a blanket or stuffed animal, to provide a sense of security. These familiar items can help ease anxiety and make the travel experience more pleasant.

Finally, we plan for regular breaks to stretch our legs, use the restroom, and have a snack. These breaks are essential for preventing restlessness and keeping everyone comfortable. We try to find rest stops with playgrounds or scenic views to make the breaks more enjoyable.
