A Day of Discovery in Moulay Idriss

Today was a day of stepping back in time and immersing ourselves in the rich cultural tapestry of the Moulay Idriss region. From exploring ancient ruins to discovering local artisan crafts, every moment was filled with wonder and appreciation. It’s amazing how much history and artistry can be packed into a single day, and I’m excited to share our experiences.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe restaurant ain zwawk مقهى و مطعم عين زواوق. The fresh Moroccan bread and mint tea were the perfect start, giving us the energy we needed for a day of exploration. Ama was particularly fond of the pastries, and Klaus enjoyed the strong, aromatic coffee. It’s these simple moments, sharing a meal together, that make our family trips so special.

After breakfast, we set off to explore Kasabah Senhaji. This historic site is a beautiful example of traditional Moroccan architecture, with its intricate designs and stunning views. As we wandered through the kasbah, I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like centuries ago. The quiet courtyards and narrow alleyways transported us to another time. The Kasabah Senhaji is set 3.7 km from Volubilis. We spent some time taking in the views of the surrounding landscape, which were absolutely breathtaking. Klaus, with his architectural eye, was fascinated by the structural details, while Ama enjoyed running around the open spaces, her laughter echoing through the ancient walls. It was a moment of pure joy, seeing her so carefree and happy.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of history.

Next on our itinerary was Bassin Souani صهريج السواني in Meknes. Although it required a bit of a drive, it was well worth the trip. This massive reservoir, built in the 17th century, is an incredible feat of engineering. As we stood by the water's edge, I was struck by the sheer scale of the structure. It was originally created to supply water to Meknes and the surrounding areas, and it’s still an impressive sight today. We took a leisurely stroll around the perimeter, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the beautiful gardens that surround the basin. Ama was fascinated by the ducks swimming in the water, and Klaus took some stunning photographs of the architecture. The Bassin Souani is a hydraulic monument measuring 149 by 319 meters with a depth of about 3 meters.

For lunch, we headed to SCORPION HOUSE. This restaurant came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. The location itself is worth the visit—perched high above Moulay Idriss, with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The climb up the narrow medina streets was a bit of a workout, but the view from the top was more than rewarding. The food was equally impressive, a delightful blend of Mediterranean and Moroccan flavors. We started with a selection of house salads, followed by perfectly cooked fish and flavorful kefta kebabs. The spices were exquisite, and everything tasted incredibly fresh. Even Ama, who can be a picky eater, thoroughly enjoyed her meal. The staff was incredibly welcoming, and the service was prompt and attentive. It was a truly magical experience, and I can understand why it’s considered one of the best restaurants in the area. The view from the terraces at Scorpion House is magical at any time of day.

After such a fulfilling lunch, we decided to indulge in a bit of shopping at The Anou Cooperative. This cooperative is a fantastic initiative that supports local artisans by providing them with a platform to sell their crafts directly to customers. I was immediately drawn to the vibrant colors and intricate designs of the handmade carpets, pottery, and clothing. We spent a couple of hours browsing the stalls, chatting with the artisans, and learning about their techniques. I was particularly impressed by the quality of the craftsmanship and the stories behind each piece. We ended up purchasing a beautiful hand-woven rug for our living room and a set of ceramic bowls for our kitchen. It felt good to support the local community and bring home a piece of Moroccan culture with us. The Anou Cooperative is well-known for its rich artistry.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Al Andaloussiya Diyafa for dinner. This traditional Moroccan house offered a cozy and authentic dining experience. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff made us feel right at home. We enjoyed a delicious tagine, a slow-cooked stew with tender meat and flavorful vegetables. The spices were perfectly balanced, and the dish was incredibly satisfying. We finished off the meal with some sweet mint tea and traditional Moroccan pastries. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day. Al Andaloussiya Diyafa offers panoramic views of Volubilis and the surrounding areas from the furnished terrace.

Reflecting on the day, I feel so grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of the Moulay Idriss region. From the ancient ruins of Kasabah Senhaji to the serene waters of Bassin Souani and the vibrant crafts of The Anou Cooperative, every moment was a treasure. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel—to discover new places, meet new people, and create lasting memories with my family.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Khemis Gate and Bab Boujloud in the morning, followed by lunch at Restaurant Moulay Idriss. In the evening, we’re looking forward to unwinding at Dar Zerhoune. It promises to be another exciting day, filled with new adventures and unforgettable experiences.

As we prepare for our eighth day in Morocco, I'm reminded of the importance of sustainable tourism and supporting local communities. It's not just about seeing the sights, but also about making a positive impact on the places we visit. I am grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with Klaus and Ama, and I look forward to continuing our journey of discovery together.
