Touching Down in the Jungle of Mirrors

After months of anticipation, the day had finally arrived. Aisha and I, along with our friends, embarked on our journey to the Reserva Nacional Pacaya Simaria. The air was thick with humidity, a stark contrast to the crisp Ottawa air I'm accustomed to, but I found it invigorating. The sounds of Iquitos buzzed around us as we prepared for our adventure into the heart of the Amazon. This trip is more than just a vacation; it's a chance to reconnect with nature and experience a world teeming with life.

Our day started early with breakfast at Amazon Bistro. The vibrant atmosphere and the aroma of local spices set the tone for the day. I opted for a hearty breakfast of *tacacho con cecina*, a local favorite made of plantains and dried, smoked meat. It was the perfect fuel for the day ahead, and Aisha enjoyed some fresh local fruits.

After breakfast, we made our way to the port, where our boat was waiting to take us into the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. The boat ride itself was an experience, as the waters reflected the sky and the dense foliage on either side, living up to the reserve's nickname, the Jungle of Mirrors. The anticipation was palpable as we knew we were heading into one of the most biodiverse places on Earth.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and ours began with a splash into the heart of the Amazon.

Upon entering the reserve, the sheer scale of the place was breathtaking. The Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve is the second largest reserve in Peru, covering over 20,000 square kilometers. The air was filled with the sounds of exotic birds and insects, a symphony of the jungle that was both calming and exhilarating. The temperature was around 32°C during the day, dropping to about 23°C in the evening. The humidity was ever-present, but we were well-prepared with our hiking boots, insect repellent, and raincoats.

Our first afternoon was dedicated to exploring the waterways. We navigated through narrow channels, with our guide pointing out various species of birds, monkeys, and other wildlife. The trees were so dense that sunlight barely reached the forest floor, creating an ethereal, almost mystical atmosphere. We spotted several species of monkeys, including the playful squirrel monkeys and the larger howler monkeys, whose calls echoed through the forest.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to YAKUMAMA RESTOBAR FLOTANTE for lunch. Dining on a floating restaurant was a unique experience. The food was delicious, featuring fresh fish and local ingredients. Aisha and I shared a *ceviche*, while some of our friends tried the grilled fish. The gentle rocking of the boat and the sounds of the river created a serene ambiance, making it a meal to remember.

After lunch, we continued our exploration, venturing deeper into the reserve. Our guide shared stories about the local communities and their traditional way of life, which has remained largely unchanged for centuries. It was fascinating to learn about their sustainable practices and their deep connection to the rainforest.

For dinner, we visited Embarcadero Restaurante Al Frío y al Fuego. This floating restaurant offered a delightful array of dishes that showcased fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, including mouthwatering seafood and traditional Peruvian specialties. The outdoor seating area overlooking the river allowed us to enjoy our meals while taking in the natural beauty surrounding us. The restaurant transformed into a magical setting illuminated by soft lights as dusk fell, creating an unforgettable backdrop for our meal.

As night fell, we decided to experience some of Iquitos's nightlife at Urcututu Disco Bar. The bar was alive with music and dancing, a vibrant contrast to the tranquility of the rainforest. We sipped on local cocktails and enjoyed the lively atmosphere, a perfect way to cap off our first day.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a unique environment. The Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve is truly a special place, a sanctuary for wildlife and a reminder of the importance of conservation. I also couldn’t help but think about Tunde and Funke back home. I know Tunde would have loved the wildlife photography opportunities, while Funke would have been fascinated by the local culture. I made a mental note to bring them back someday.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Lago Sanango and Shelter Posa Gloria, further exploring the wonders of the Pacaya-Samiria. I am particularly excited about the prospect of seeing more of the unique wildlife that calls this place home. I also hope to pick up a lightweight hammock at Artrsania to replace the one I forgot. As I drift off to sleep, I can still hear the sounds of the jungle, a lullaby that promises more adventures to come.

As an engineer, I often find myself immersed in the world of technology, but this trip reminds me of the importance of connecting with nature. The Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve is a world away from Ottawa, but it feels like coming home in a way. The simplicity of life here, the close connection to the land, and the vibrant culture are all things that resonate deeply with me.

I'm eager to share more of our adventures with you, so stay tuned for the next installment of our journey through the Amazon.
