A Fond Farewell to the Amazon

As my journey through the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past eleven days. The Amazon has a way of captivating your soul, leaving an indelible mark on your heart. It's a place where the symphony of nature plays out in full force, and I'm so grateful to have witnessed it with my own eyes. This final day was all about savouring every last moment, etching the sights, sounds, and smells of the rainforest into my memory.

Our morning began, as most mornings do in the Amazon, with the sounds of the jungle awakening. After a hearty breakfast at THE YELLOW ROSE OF TEXAS RESTAURANT, we set out for one last immersive Amazon experience. I savoured a traditional breakfast, a delightful combination of local flavors and familiar comforts. The restaurant, known for its diverse menu, provided the perfect start to our final day in Iquitos.

The air was thick with humidity, but the excitement of the unknown propelled us forward. We ventured deep into the rainforest, our guide leading the way with an uncanny ability to spot hidden creatures. We observed playful monkeys swinging through the canopy, vibrant macaws soaring overhead, and elusive caimans lurking in the murky waters. The biodiversity of Pacaya-Samiria is simply astounding.

The journey may be ending, but the memories will last a lifetime.

As we navigated the waterways, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness such unspoiled natural beauty. The Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve is a true treasure, a sanctuary for countless species and a testament to the power of nature. It's a reminder of the importance of conservation and the need to protect these precious ecosystems for future generations. Aisha would have loved this, she is always talking about conservation and protecting our natural resources.

For lunch, we stopped at Embarcadero Restaurante Al Frío y al Fuego. The floating restaurant offered a unique dining experience, with stunning views of the Itaya River. I enjoyed a delicious meal of fresh fish, expertly prepared with local spices. The flavors of the Amazon are truly unique, a testament to the region's rich culinary heritage. The restaurant's ambiance was perfect for reflecting on our journey, sharing stories and laughter with my friends. It was a perfect way to recharge before our final adventure of the day.

After lunch, we visited a shelter for travellers, where we had the chance to interact with local artisans and learn about their traditional crafts. I was particularly impressed by the intricate weaving and the vibrant colors of the textiles. It was a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of the Amazonian people and their deep connection to the land. I picked up a few souvenirs for Aisha and the kids, knowing they would appreciate the unique artistry and the stories behind each piece. Project Selva supports indigenous communities of the Peruvian Amazon with a scalable revenue stream generated through the sale of handmade crafts.

As the sun began to set, we gathered at Amazon Bistro for a farewell dinner. The cozy atmosphere and the delicious food provided the perfect setting for our final meal together. We reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip, sharing stories and laughter. The bistro, known for its charming ambiance and tasty dishes, was a fitting end to our culinary journey through the Amazon.

After dinner, we decided to visit Restobar Zona Sismica for one last taste of Iquitos nightlife. The bar was lively and welcoming, with a great selection of local drinks and music. We danced and celebrated our incredible adventure, raising a toast to the Amazon and the memories we had made together. It was a perfect way to say goodbye to this magical place.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back home, carrying with us a wealth of memories and experiences. The Amazon has challenged me, inspired me, and changed me in ways I never expected. I've learned so much about the natural world, about the importance of conservation, and about the resilience of the human spirit. I am bringing with me some Shambo Popsicles, an Iquitos original, for the kids.

As I prepare to leave, I am already planning my return. The Amazon has a way of drawing you back, beckoning you to explore its hidden depths and discover its untold secrets. I know that this is not goodbye, but simply farewell for now.

Reflecting on the essentials I brought, I'm glad I had my hiking boots, insect repellent, raincoat, camera, binoculars, portable charger, and sunscreen. However, I do wish I hadn't forgotten extra memory cards for my camera and a lightweight hammock. Next time, I'll be sure to pack them!

Until next time, Amazon. Thank you for the adventure.

Looking ahead, while there isn't a specific itinerary for tomorrow as the trip concludes, I'm excited to return home and share these incredible stories with Aisha, Tunde, and Funke. I know they'll be eager to hear all about the wildlife, the culture, and the unforgettable moments I experienced in the heart of the Amazon.

Perhaps, I'll even inspire them to join me on my next adventure!

I’m already looking forward to planning our next family trip. Maybe we’ll explore more of South America, or perhaps venture to a different continent altogether. The world is full of wonders waiting to be discovered, and I can’t wait to experience them with my loved ones.
