Whispers of the Amazon

Today was a day of profound connection with the Amazon, a gentle immersion into its quieter corners. Leaving the bustle of Iquitos behind feels like stepping into another world, one where the rhythm of life slows to the pulse of the river and the rustle of leaves. It's a stark contrast to my life back in Ottawa, where the digital world often drowns out the natural one. Here, the symphony of the rainforest reasserts itself, reminding me of the simple, essential beauty of our planet.

Our day began, as most days should, with a hearty breakfast right in the heart of Reserva Nacional Pacaya Samiria. There’s something about eating in the open air, surrounded by the sounds of the awakening jungle, that makes the food taste even better. The air was thick with humidity, a palpable reminder of the life teeming all around us. Aisha would have loved this; she always appreciates the freshness of mornings in nature.

After breakfast, we set out to explore Lago Cuipari. The lake was like a vast, still mirror, reflecting the sky and the dense foliage along its banks. The reflections were so perfect, it was hard to tell where the water ended and the jungle began – a true 'Jungle of Mirrors' experience. Paddling across the lake, the silence was broken only by the gentle dip of our oars and the occasional call of a bird hidden deep within the trees. It was a meditative experience, a chance to quiet my mind and simply be present. I found myself thinking of my children, Tunde and Funke, and wishing they could experience this serenity. Perhaps next time, I’ll convince them to join Aisha and me on one of these adventures.

The Amazon is not just a place; it's an experience that seeps into your soul, leaving you forever changed.

We spent the morning observing the wildlife around the lake. Although I didn’t have my lightweight hammock, which I regrettably forgot, I found a comfortable spot on the boat to observe a variety of birds, each more colorful than the last. Binoculars in hand, I managed to spot a few macaws soaring overhead, their vibrant plumage a stark contrast to the green canopy. I also caught a glimpse of a monkey swinging through the trees, its playful energy a reminder of the untamed spirit of the Amazon. It’s moments like these that make me wish I had remembered to pack extra memory cards for my camera; there's always something new and captivating to capture.

For lunch, we found ourselves at THE YELLOW ROSE OF TEXAS RESTAURANT. A rather unexpected name in the middle of the Amazon, but the food was surprisingly good! I enjoyed a hearty meal of local fish, grilled to perfection and seasoned with herbs I couldn’t quite identify. It was a welcome break and a chance to recharge before our next adventure. The restaurant itself was simple but charming, with friendly staff who were eager to share stories about the region.

Our afternoon was spent at Campamento Panteon. While the name might sound a bit ominous, it was actually a fascinating place. It served as our base for exploring more of the surrounding jungle. We took a guided walk through the forest, learning about the medicinal properties of various plants and the intricate relationships between the different species. Our guide, a local from one of the nearby communities, shared his extensive knowledge of the Amazon, explaining how the indigenous people have lived in harmony with the rainforest for centuries.

He showed us how to identify different types of trees, how to find water in the jungle, and how to use certain plants for first aid. It was an education in survival and a reminder of the resourcefulness of the human spirit. I couldn’t help but think about my life back in Ottawa, where we rely so heavily on technology and modern conveniences. Here, in the Amazon, life is simpler, more connected to the natural world.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Amazon Bistro for dinner. The bistro offered a cozy atmosphere, and I enjoyed a delicious meal while reflecting on the day's experiences. The temperature in September is warm, averaging around 32°C during the day and dropping to about 23°C in the evening. It’s essential to stay hydrated and wear light, breathable clothing, as well as pack a raincoat, just in case.

To cap off the evening, we ventured out to Mistika Restobar. The restobar had a vibrant atmosphere. I decided to try a local cocktail made with exotic fruits and a splash of rum. It was the perfect way to unwind and soak in the energy of the Amazon night. Sipping my drink, I listened to the sounds of the jungle – the chirping of insects, the croaking of frogs, and the distant calls of nocturnal animals. It was a symphony of nature, a reminder of the incredible biodiversity that surrounds us.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Reserva Nacional Pacaya Samiria - Acatupel Agency and Jungle Reps. I’m particularly looking forward to learning more about the conservation efforts in the region and seeing more of the incredible wildlife. I also plan to visit Mini Bazar Müller to pick up some souvenirs for Aisha and the kids.

As I lay in my tent, listening to the sounds of the Amazon, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. This journey has been a reminder of the importance of connecting with nature, of appreciating the simple things in life, and of learning from different cultures. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this incredible part of the world and to share my experiences with you. Goodnight from the Amazon!
