Whispers of the Earth

Today was a symphony of natural wonders, a day where the echoes of the past resonated through caves, the majesty of nature cascaded down basalt cliffs, and the raw power of Iceland's volcanic heart was on full display. Lena and I, along with our friends, set out to explore some of the Snæfellsbær area's most captivating sites, and each location left us in awe of the sheer beauty and geological marvels that this peninsula holds.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Harbour Cafe in Grundarfjörður. The aroma of freshly baked pastries and strong Icelandic coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our adventures. I opted for their traditional Plokkfiskur, a fish stew with a twist, while Lena enjoyed a lobster sandwich. Omar was happy with a croissant. The cafe's warm atmosphere and stunning views of the fjord made it a delightful start to the day. It's these simple, authentic experiences that truly enrich a journey, reminding me of the warmth of Jordanian hospitality back home.

Fueled and ready, our first destination was the Sönghellir Cave, also known as the 'Cave of Songs'. The drive there was exhilarating, passing through rugged landscapes and dramatic coastlines. As we approached the cave, the wind picked up, carrying with it the scent of the sea and the promise of something extraordinary. Legend says that Sönghellir was once a shelter for the family of Bárður Snæfellsás, a half-man, half-giant considered the guardian spirit of the area. Stepping inside, I could almost feel the weight of history and mythology surrounding us. The acoustics were simply magical; every whisper echoed and danced within the cave's chamber. Lena even tried humming a tune from a Fairuz song, and the cave transformed it into a hauntingly beautiful echo. I tried a Jordanian Bedouin song that my grandfather used to sing to me, and it felt like he was right there with me. It was an experience that transcended the ordinary, connecting us to both the geological and mythical heart of Snæfellsnes.

The earth has music for those who listen.

Leaving Sönghellir, we drove towards Bjarnarfoss, a slender, two-tiered waterfall cascading down basalt cliffs. As we parked the car and began our short hike, the landscape opened up before us, revealing the waterfall in all its glory. Bjarnarfoss, meaning 'Bears' Waterfall,' plunges 80 meters (262 feet) into the river Bjarná. The water swayed and danced against the cliff, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The basalt columns lining the cliffside resembled a man-made castle wall, adding to the waterfall's dramatic charm. According to local lore, the 'Fjallkonan' (Lady of the Mountain), Iceland's national personification, stands beneath the waterfall, with the spray falling on her shoulders and bosom. I could see why this place was considered special; it felt as though we were in the presence of something ancient and powerful. Lena took some amazing photos, capturing the essence of Bjarnarfoss in all its misty splendor. Omar was fascinated by the waterfall, and kept asking me how the water got to the top of the mountain. I tried my best to explain the water cycle to him.

After soaking in the beauty of Bjarnarfoss, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Reks in Ólafsvík, a restaurant known for its fresh Icelandic ingredients and cozy atmosphere. As it was mid-day, we were looking for something quick, so we ordered some pizzas and sandwiches. The food was delicious. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a vibrant, friendly atmosphere. It was a perfect place to recharge before our final adventure of the day.

Our last stop was the Saxhóll Crater, one of the most popular craters on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Located 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) south of Hellissandur, Saxhóll rises 109 meters (358 feet) above sea level. The crater was formed an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 years ago during a volcanic explosion. Climbing the 385 steps to the top was a bit of a workout, but the panoramic views were well worth the effort. From the summit, we could see the vast lava fields, the shimmering ocean, and the distant Snæfellsjökull glacier. The wind was strong, but the feeling of being on top of the world was exhilarating. I felt a deep connection to the earth, a sense of understanding the forces that shaped this incredible landscape. Lena pointed out the various geological formations, explaining how each one was formed. Omar was running around the rim, pretending to be an astronaut exploring a new planet. The Saxhóll Crater was a stark reminder of Iceland's volcanic heritage and raw natural power.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to stop by The Freezer Hostel, Apartments & Culture Centre for a drink. This unique establishment is not just a hostel; it's a cultural hub that hosts theatre shows, live music, and various artistic events. The atmosphere was laid-back and welcoming, with travelers from all over the world sharing stories and experiences. I ordered a local craft beer, while Lena opted for a glass of wine. Omar enjoyed a soda while playing some of the games available. The Freezer was a perfect way to end our day, surrounded by creativity and camaraderie.

Today was a day of exploration, discovery, and connection. From the echoing depths of Sönghellir Cave to the cascading heights of Bjarnarfoss and the panoramic views from Saxhóll Crater, we experienced the diverse beauty of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. As we drove back to our campsite, the sky was ablaze with the colors of sunset, painting a perfect ending to an unforgettable day. I thought about my home back in Al-Karak, Jordan and how much this landscape reminded me of the desert. It's funny how different places can evoke similar feelings.

Tomorrow, we are planning to explore Lýsuhóll, Ölkelduvatn Mineral Spring, and Dagverdará waterfall. I am excited to see what adventures await us!

And as I reflect on our adventures, I'm reminded that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing them fully, connecting with the land, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. As the Icelandic saying goes:

Far away pastures always look greener.

Until tomorrow,

Ahmed.
