A Fond Farewell to Perugia

As our week-long family adventure in Perugia draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared. From exploring the historic city center to indulging in the local cuisine, this trip has been a delightful blend of culture, history, and family bonding. Today, our final day, promises to be just as enriching, with visits to the Abbazia di San Pietro, the serene Frontone Gardens, and the imposing Etruscan Arch. I'm eager to soak in every last moment of this enchanting city before we bid it farewell.

Our last day in Perugia began with a hearty breakfast at Locanda del Morlacchi. Lena and I enjoyed strong Italian coffees, while Omar devoured a plate of *cornetti*. The aroma of freshly baked bread and the lively chatter of locals created a warm and inviting atmosphere. It was the perfect start to a day filled with exploration and discovery. Looking at the menu, I was tempted by the *tartare di chianina*, but decided to keep it light for the day ahead.

Our first stop was the Abbazia di San Pietro, a stunning basilica with origins dating back to the 10th century. As we approached, the abbey's bell tower, the tallest structure in Perugia, dominated the skyline. The architecture was a beautiful blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles. Inside, the abbey was a treasure trove of medieval art, with intricate frescoes and sculptures that told stories of religious devotion and cultural richness. Omar was fascinated by the artwork, especially the vibrant colors and detailed figures. Lena, with her artistic eye, appreciated the craftsmanship and historical significance of each piece.

The beauty of Perugia lies not just in its monuments, but in the way history and culture intertwine with daily life.

I was particularly impressed by the main altar, adorned with magnificent artworks that reflected the artistic brilliance of the period. The serene ambiance of the abbey provided a peaceful retreat from the bustling city outside. We also explored the tranquil gardens surrounding the abbey, enjoying picturesque views of the cityscape. I captured a few photos, trying to capture the golden light that bathed the abbey's exterior.

Next, we headed to the Frontone Gardens, a haven of tranquility amidst the city's vibrant energy. Built on the site of a former Etruscan cemetery, the gardens were adorned with perennial oak trees, lush green plants, and winding walking paths. A beautiful water fountain added to the serene atmosphere. Omar loved running around the open spaces, while Lena and I enjoyed a leisurely stroll, taking in the peaceful surroundings. I even spotted a small amphitheater, imagining the parties and movie shows that might take place there during the summer months. The gardens provided a perfect spot for relaxation and reflection, a welcome break from our busy itinerary.

As we walked through the gardens, I couldn't help but think about my family back in Hamburg. I imagined telling them about the beautiful landscapes and the rich history we were experiencing. I also thought about my parents in Al-Karak, Jordan, wishing they could be here with us to share in these moments. Travel, for me, is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with loved ones and creating lasting memories.

Our final attraction of the day was the Etruscan Arch, a majestic gateway that once served as a key defensive entrance to ancient Perugia. Constructed in the 3rd century BCE, the arch was an imposing structure, built from massive travertine blocks. I was struck by the sophisticated engineering and immense scale of this ancient monument. As we stood beneath the arch, I imagined the thousands of people who had passed through its gates over the centuries, connecting the modern traveler with the rhythm of city life. The arch led to Corso Garibaldi, a charming street lined with artisan shops, cafes, and churches. We explored the street, soaking in the atmosphere and admiring the blend of ancient and modern life.

Before lunch, we stopped by Altromercato Perugia Bottega, a unique shop offering organic products and handcrafted crafts. It was a great spot to pick up some ethically sourced souvenirs. Lena bought a beautiful hand-woven scarf, while I chose some Jordanian spices to bring back home, a little taste of Al-Karak for our kitchen in Hamburg. I always appreciate finding places that support fair trade and sustainable practices; it aligns with my values and adds a meaningful touch to our travels.

For lunch, we decided to try AVVERSO Ristorante, known for its modern take on traditional Umbrian cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured a variety of creative dishes. Lena and I shared a plate of *tortelli mantovani*, while Omar enjoyed a simple pasta with tomato sauce. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was a perfect culinary experience to cap off our day of exploration.

As the evening approached, we made our way to Ristorante IL CANTINONE Perugia Centro for our final dinner in Perugia. This restaurant, located in ancient cellars dating back to the 14th century, offered a traditional Umbrian dining experience. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the menu featured a variety of local specialties. We started with a selection of cured meats and cheeses, followed by *umbricelli* with sausage and pecorino cheese. For the main course, I opted for grilled lamb chops, while Lena chose the *strappazata* with black truffle. The food was hearty and flavorful, and the service was impeccable. It was a perfect way to end our culinary journey in Perugia.

During dinner, we reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip. Omar loved the chocolate tasting, while Lena enjoyed the art museums and historical sites. I cherished the moments spent exploring the charming streets and connecting with the local culture. As we savored our final bites, I felt a sense of gratitude for the experiences we had shared and the memories we had created.

As we prepare to leave Perugia tomorrow, I am filled with a sense of contentment and gratitude. This trip has been a wonderful opportunity to explore a new culture, connect with my family, and create lasting memories. I am grateful for the chance to share these experiences with my readers and inspire them to embark on their own adventures. Until next time, *Arrivederci Perugia*!

Tomorrow, we will begin our journey back home, cherishing the memories of our family adventure in Perugia. While there are no specific itinerary items for tomorrow, the trip itself will be the journey home, filled with reflections on the week's experiences. I already know I'll be looking back on this trip fondly for years to come.
