Whispers of the Past

Today was a day of delving deep into the historical heart of Pamukkale, a journey through time that left me in awe of the civilizations that once thrived here. From the sprawling necropolis to the grandeur of an ancient theater and the intriguing ruins of Tripolis, every stone seemed to whisper stories of emperors, gladiators, and everyday life in a bygone era. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel – to connect with the past and understand the layers of history that shape our world.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hiera Coffee & Tea House Restaurant. Fuelled up, I set off to explore the ancient city of Tripolis. Just a short drive from Pamukkale, Tripolis is an archaeological site that offers a glimpse into a city that once stood at the crossroads of Phrygia, Caria, and Lydia. As I wandered through the ruins, I imagined the bustling streets filled with merchants, artisans, and travelers from all corners of the ancient world. The city's strategic location made it a vital hub for trade and cultural exchange.

The remnants of public buildings, city gates, and streets painted a vivid picture of urban life in Roman and Byzantine times. Although not as well-known as Hierapolis, Tripolis has its own charm, with ongoing excavations revealing new insights into its history. The 2nd-century fountain that was uncovered in 2019 was a particular highlight, showcasing the city's advanced engineering and artistic sensibilities.

After immersing myself in the sights of Tripolis, I made my way back to Pamukkale to explore the Necropolis of Hierapolis. This ancient cemetery stretches across the hills, a silent city of the dead that is remarkably well-preserved. As I walked among the tombs, I was struck by the variety of architectural styles, from simple sarcophagi to elaborate mausoleums. The inscriptions on the tombstones, many in Greek, offered glimpses into the lives and beliefs of those who were laid to rest here.

The Necropolis is vast, with over 1,200 tombs dating back to the Hellenistic, Roman, and early Christian periods. It is considered one of the best-preserved necropolises in Turkey. Walking through it, I felt a profound sense of connection to the people who once called this place home. It was a sobering reminder of the transience of life and the enduring power of memory.

Next on my itinerary was the Hierapolis Ancient Theater, a magnificent structure that dominates the landscape. Built in the 2nd century AD during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, the theater could accommodate up to 15,000 spectators. As I stood on the stage, I imagined the roar of the crowd, the drama of the plays, and the spectacle of the gladiatorial contests that once unfolded here.

The theater's architecture is a testament to Roman engineering and artistic skill. The stage building is adorned with intricate reliefs depicting scenes from mythology and imperial life. The acoustics are remarkable, and even today, one can easily hear a whisper from the stage reach the top rows of the seating area. It's easy to see why this theater is considered one of the best-preserved ancient theaters in Turkey.

After a long day of exploring, I was ready for a good meal. I headed to Mehmets Heaven for lunch, where I enjoyed traditional Turkish cuisine with a view of the travertines. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming.

In the late afternoon, I took some time to wander through the Pamukkale Market, a bustling bazaar filled with local crafts, textiles, and souvenirs. I picked up a few small gifts for Lena and Omar, hoping they would appreciate a little piece of Turkey. I even managed to find a small Oud, a traditional instrument I enjoy playing, I am looking forward to adding it to my collection in Hamburg.

Tomorrow, I plan to continue my exploration of Hierapolis, visiting the Templo de Apollo, Cehennem Kapısı (Plutonium), and Piscina de Cleopatra. I am particularly excited to swim in Cleopatra's Pool, said to have been a gift from Mark Antony to Cleopatra. It sounds like the perfect way to end another day of adventure in Pamukkale. I might grab a drink at Cadde Steak House afterwards, if I am not too tired.

Back at Hotel Goreme Sakura, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. Today was a reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage that Turkey has to offer. As I drifted off to sleep, I dreamt of ancient cities, grand theaters, and the echoes of empires that continue to resonate through time.
