Solo Exploration of Pamukkale's Thermal Wonders
Day 8: A Farewell to Pamukkale: Reflecting on Thermal Waters and Ancient Echoes
Concluding my solo journey in Pamukkale with a visit to Honaz National Park and Hierapolis' Byzantine Church, cherishing Turkey's beauty.
A Final Day of Discovery
As my solo journey through Pamukkale draws to a close, I spent my final day soaking in the natural beauty and historical wonders that this region of Turkey has to offer. It's hard to believe it's already the last day; time really does fly when you're exploring ancient cities and stunning landscapes. Today was all about embracing the tranquility of nature and reflecting on the rich history that permeates every corner of this land.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Alaturka Pamukkale. I enjoyed a traditional Turkish spread, complete with fresh bread, olives, cheeses, and strong Turkish coffee. Fuelled up and ready for the day, I set off to Honaz National Park.
Discover the breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife of Honaz National Park, a serene retreat in Denizli, Turkey, ideal for outdoor adventures and relaxation.
The drive there was scenic, with glimpses of rural Turkish life along the way. Honaz Mountain, the highest peak in the Aegean region, dominates the landscape, and I was eager to explore its natural beauty.
Unfortunately, parts of Honaz National Park are currently under construction, with new play areas, picnic tables, and water features being added. Despite the ongoing work, the park still offered a serene escape. I took a leisurely walk, enjoying the fresh mountain air and the panoramic views. The park is known for its diverse flora and fauna, and although I didn't spot any wild goats, I did see various birds and small wildlife. The crisp December air was invigorating, a stark contrast to the warmer temperatures I experienced earlier in the week. I imagine this park is a popular summer escape, offering shade and cool breezes to locals and tourists alike.
The journey matters as much as the destination, offering moments of reflection and appreciation along the way.
After spending a refreshing morning in Honaz, I drove back towards Pamukkale, my next stop being Schildkrötensee, or Turtle Lake.

Experience the serene beauty of Schildkrötensee, a tranquil swimming lake in Honaz, Denizli, perfect for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
It was a small, peaceful lake, and I enjoyed a few quiet moments there, watching the ducks glide across the water. It wasn't teeming with turtles as the name might suggest, but the tranquility of the place was worth the visit. I took some photos, capturing the serene atmosphere of the lake before heading to my next destination.
Lunch was at Kervansaray Restaurant, a local favorite known for its traditional Turkish cuisine.

I ordered a mixed grill, and it was a delicious assortment of kebabs, grilled vegetables, and rice. The flavors were rich and satisfying, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect midday meal to replenish my energy for the afternoon's explorations. The Kervansaray also had a great family vibe.
With my stomach full and my spirit refreshed, I ventured to the Hierapolis Byzantine Church.
Explore the enchanting Hierapolis Byzantine Church in Pamukkale, a historical gem showcasing exquisite Byzantine architecture amidst stunning natural beauty.
As I approached the site, I was immediately struck by the historical significance of the ruins. The church, dating back to the 6th century AD, stands as a testament to Hierapolis' importance as an early Christian center. Walking through the remains of the basilica, I imagined the countless worshippers who had gathered here centuries ago. The intricate marble flooring and the towering columns hinted at the grandeur of the original structure. It was humbling to stand in a place where so much history had unfolded.
Hierapolis, meaning Holy City, was indeed a fitting name for this ancient settlement. The city was once a prominent center for Christianity, and the Byzantine Church played a crucial role in its religious life. The apostle Philip is believed to have spent his final years here, and the church was allegedly built on the spot where he was crucified in AD 80. The site has become a pilgrimage destination for Christians from around the world.
The church's architecture reflected the Byzantine style, characterized by its large nave, marble flooring, and sacred relics. Although much of the structure is now in ruins, the remaining walls and columns still evoke a sense of awe and reverence. I explored the surrounding area, taking in the panoramic views of Hierapolis and the travertines of Pamukkale. The combination of natural beauty and historical significance made this a truly special place.
As the sun began to set, casting a warm golden glow over the landscape, I made my way to Venus hotel restaurante for dinner.

After dinner, I decided to experience a bit of Pamukkale's nightlife at Ruuby Club.
