Day 9: Chasing Waterfalls and Local Flavors: A Day of Adventure in Akchour
Embark on a thrilling hike to Akchour Waterfalls, savor local cuisine at Chefchaouen's best restaurants, and unwind at Mandala bar.
Akchour's Embrace & Culinary Delights
Today was a day of embracing the raw beauty of Morocco and savoring its authentic flavors. Leaving the familiar blue streets of Chefchaouen behind, we ventured into the Rif Mountains, where nature's wonders and local hospitality intertwined to create an unforgettable experience. It was a day of contrasts – from the invigorating hike to the serene waterfalls to the bustling energy of the local restaurants and the cozy ambiance of a hidden bar.
The morning began with an early start, as Daniel and I, along with our friends, piled into our pre-booked taxi. The destination was Akchour, a small village nestled in the Rif Mountains, known for its stunning waterfalls and natural bridge. The drive itself was an adventure, winding through lush landscapes and offering glimpses of traditional Moroccan life far removed from the tourist trails. I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation building as we approached the trailhead, the air growing crisper and the scenery becoming more dramatic.
The Akchour hike is something I'd recommend to anyone visiting Chefchaouen in November, even though it's not quite the peak season. The weather was mild, perfect for a trek through the mountains, and the trails were less crowded than what I imagine they would be during the summer months. We opted for a guided hike, a decision I was grateful for as our guide, Youssef, shared fascinating insights about the local flora, fauna, and Berber culture.
The trail itself was moderately challenging, with some rocky sections and steep inclines, but the breathtaking views more than made up for it. Along the way, we passed crystal-clear streams, lush forests, and unique rock formations, each turn revealing a new vista more stunning than the last. About 15-20 minutes into our hike, we encountered the first waterfall—a preview of the magnificence to come. The crystal-clear pools were perfect for a refreshing dip, but we decided to continue to the main attraction.
The journey to Akchour wasn't just a hike; it was an immersion into the soul of Morocco, where nature's grandeur meets the warmth of its people.
After about an hour and a half of hiking, we finally reached the Akchour waterfalls, and the sight was simply mesmerizing. Cascading waters flowed into serene turquoise pools, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty. We spent some time there, taking photos, enjoying the refreshing mist, and simply soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. Some of our friends even braved the chilly water for a quick dip, their laughter echoing through the mountains.

I made sure to capture every moment with my camera, trying to preserve the magic of this place. I thought about how different this was from my usual life in Bristol, coding away in front of a computer screen. It was a welcome change, a reminder of the importance of connecting with nature and experiencing the world beyond the digital realm. Daniel, ever the supportive husband, made sure I had enough water and snacks, knowing how much I love these kinds of adventures.
The hike back offered completely different views and perspectives. The changing light throughout the day transformed the landscape. That magical interplay of shadows and sunlight through the forest canopy created an almost spiritual experience. We stopped at one of the smaller pools for a refreshing swim. The water was crystal clear and surprisingly invigorating—just be prepared for that mountain chill!
Back in Chefchaouen, our appetites were roaring. We decided to dive headfirst into the local culinary scene. Our first stop was Chez Foad, a restaurant recommended by several locals. It turned out to be a hidden gem, serving authentic Moroccan dishes in a cozy, welcoming setting. I ordered the tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew, while Daniel opted for the couscous, a staple dish made with semolina and vegetables. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the skill and passion of the chefs. The warm hospitality of the staff made us feel right at home, as if we were dining with family.

Next on our culinary adventure was Restaurant Chourafa, known for its stunning views and delicious seafood. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the delights on offer. We secured a table with a panoramic view of the city and ordered a selection of seafood dishes, from grilled fish to shrimp tagine. The seafood was incredibly fresh, bursting with the flavors of the Mediterranean. The combination of exquisite food and breathtaking views made for an unforgettable dining experience.

For our final dinner stop, we chose HERMANOS, a restaurant that promised a fusion of Moroccan, Mediterranean, and Italian flavors. The ambiance was lively and modern, with a touch of traditional Moroccan décor. We sampled a variety of dishes, from Moroccan tagines to Italian pasta, each one expertly prepared and bursting with flavor. It was a delightful culinary journey, showcasing the diverse influences that have shaped Moroccan cuisine.

As the day drew to a close, we sought out a place to unwind and reflect on our adventures. Mandala, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and creative cocktails, beckoned us with its promise of a perfect ending to a perfect day. We settled into comfortable seats, ordered a round of drinks, and shared stories of our Akchour hike and culinary escapades. The bar was filled with a mix of locals and travelers, creating a vibrant and convivial atmosphere.

The bartenders were skilled mixologists, crafting unique and delicious cocktails that perfectly complemented the ambiance. As I sipped my drink, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment wash over me. Today had been a whirlwind of adventure, culture, and culinary delights, a true immersion into the heart and soul of Morocco. I thought about my Kazakh roots and how much I enjoy experiencing new cultures and sharing them with others through my blog.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the viewpoints and parks within Chefchaouen itself, including the View Point and Park Sidi Abdelhamid. We're also planning to do some souvenir shopping at CHAOUEN GIFTS and try out Restaurant Bab Kasaba, Restaurant Hamsa, and Restaurant Parador. I am excited to see what other hidden gems Chefchaouen has in store for us.
