Immerse yourself in Chefchaouen's blue-washed medina, explore the Kasbah, and savor Moroccan flavors in this captivating travelogue.
First Impressions of the Blue Pearl
After a long journey from Bristol, via Tangier, I finally arrived in Chefchaouen, the famed 'Blue Pearl' of Morocco. The drive through the Rif Mountains was scenic, but nothing could have prepared me for the sight of this town. The buildings are awash in a spectrum of blue hues, from the palest sky blue to deep indigo. I’m excited to share my first day of exploration with you all!
Arriving at Riad Zaitouna Chaouen, I was immediately struck by its charm. The riad is nestled perfectly, offering stunning views of the city. After settling in, Daniel and I were eager to dive into the heart of Chefchaouen: the Medina.

The Chefchaouen Medina is unlike any other place I’ve ever visited. Getting lost in its narrow, winding alleyways was the best way to start my adventure. Every corner turned revealed a new photo opportunity, with the blue walls serving as the perfect backdrop. The unique color scheme is said to have been introduced by Jewish refugees in the 1930s, who believed the color symbolized the sky and the presence of God. Regardless of its origins, the blue is now synonymous with Chefchaouen and is a key part of the town's allure.

Exploring the Medina, I was immediately drawn to the local crafts. The small shops overflowed with hand-woven rugs, intricate leather goods, and colorful pottery. I couldn't resist purchasing a small, hand-painted tagine as a souvenir. It’s a reminder of the artistry that thrives in this blue city.
Wandering through Chefchaouen is like stepping into a dream, where every shade of blue tells a story of history, culture, and art.
Next on our list was the Kasbah, a 15th-century fortress built to protect the town. The Kasbah now houses a museum showcasing the region's history, culture, and art. Wandering through the exhibits, I learned about the ancient Berber life and the town's colonial past. Climbing the Kasbah's tower offered panoramic views of the blue-washed Medina and the surrounding Rif Mountains. It was a breathtaking sight, and I spent a good while just soaking it all in.

After the Kasbah, we made our way to Plaza Uta el-Hammam, the heart of Chefchaouen. This bustling square is lined with cafes and restaurants, offering a perfect spot to relax and people-watch. We settled into a cozy cafe and ordered traditional Moroccan mint tea. Sipping the sweet, fragrant tea while watching the locals go about their day was a truly immersive experience. The square is framed by the majestic Rif Mountains and the distinctive blue-washed buildings that Chefchaouen is renowned for. The interplay of colors throughout the day, particularly during sunset, provides a stunning visual experience.

For lunch, we decided to try Restaurant Bab Ssour, recommended for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was charming, with cozy décor and a welcoming staff. I ordered the Moroccan Chicken Tajin, and Daniel opted for the Moroccan Lamb Tajin. Both dishes were flavorful and authentic, a true taste of Moroccan heritage.

In the late afternoon, we ventured back into the Medina to explore more of the local shops. I was particularly interested in the Chefchaouen crafts. I found a small shop selling hand-woven blankets with intricate Berber designs. I chatted with the artisan, learning about the traditional weaving techniques passed down through generations.

As evening approached, we decided to revisit Cafe Clock, a place recommended by several locals. While it functions as a bar, it is so much more than that. It's a vibrant cultural hub known for its delicious food and lively atmosphere. We enjoyed some live music while sipping on refreshing drinks. It was the perfect way to end our first day in Chefchaouen.

Before heading back to the Riad, we took one last stroll through Plaza Uta el-Hammam. The square was even more magical at night, with the soft glow of lanterns illuminating the blue buildings. The air was filled with the sounds of laughter and music, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Ras El Ma, where fresh mountain springs meet the rhythms of daily local life. We also intend to visit the Bouzafer Mosque for a breathtaking sunset view and to explore the City View Point for panoramic vistas. I’m also hoping to find the Blue. concept store for some unique finds.
My first day in Chefchaouen was nothing short of magical. The blue-washed Medina, the historic Kasbah, and the vibrant Plaza Uta el-Hammam all contributed to an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
As I reflect on today's adventure, I realize that I forgot to pack an adapter for Moroccan outlets and an extra memory card for my camera! Note to self: always double-check the essentials. Despite these minor setbacks, I'm grateful for the experiences and memories made today. Chefchaouen has already captured my heart, and I look forward to discovering more of its hidden gems.
