Exploring Reykjavik: A Family Adventure in Iceland
Day 8: Island Escapes and City Quests: A Day of Icelandic Delights
Discover Reykjavik's charm with a ferry to Viðey Island, an escape room adventure, and delicious Icelandic cuisine. A day filled with fun!

Island Time and Urban Thrills
Today was a delightful mix of serene island exploration and engaging urban adventure here in Reykjavik. It's amazing how much variety this city offers, and I'm so glad we packed in as much as possible. I was particularly excited for today, as it promised a blend of history, art, and a bit of mystery—perfect for keeping both Daniel and me entertained.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Sandholt Bakery. The pastries were absolutely divine, and the coffee was just what we needed to kickstart our morning. Fuelled up, we headed to the harbor to catch the ferry to Viðey Island. It was a beautiful morning, with clear skies and calm waters, making the short ride incredibly pleasant.

Viðey Island: A Step Back in Time
Viðey Island is a gem just a short boat ride from Reykjavik. As the ferry approached, the island's tranquil beauty was immediately apparent. The island is steeped in history, with archaeological remains dating back to Iceland's settlement period. As we disembarked, the fresh sea air filled our lungs, and we were ready to explore.
Our first stop was Viðey House, one of Iceland's oldest buildings. Inside, we admired the paintings by renowned Icelandic artists, each piece telling a story of the island's rich cultural heritage. It's fascinating to think that this island was once home to educated and influential people in Icelandic society.
Next, we wandered towards the Imagine Peace Tower, Yoko Ono's tribute to John Lennon. Although it wasn't lit during our visit, the tower's presence was still powerful, a symbol of hope and unity. I could just imagine how stunning it must look when illuminated, sending a beacon of peace into the night sky. The views from this part of the island were breathtaking, with the Reykjavik skyline in the distance.
The island's serene beauty and rich history offer a perfect escape from the city's hustle and bustle.
We also explored the Milestones, a series of basalt columns created by Richard Serra. These structures frame certain landmarks, adding an artistic touch to the natural landscape. It was a unique experience to walk among these columns, appreciating the way they interact with the environment.
As we strolled along the island's paths, we enjoyed the diverse birdlife, with numerous species nesting and flying overhead. The island is divided into Heimaey and Vesturey, linked by a narrow isthmus, and we made sure to explore both parts. The peacefulness of Viðey was a welcome contrast to the city's energy, providing a perfect opportunity to relax and reflect.
Before catching the ferry back, we visited the Viðey Church, a charming 18th-century building that offered a glimpse into Iceland's religious and architectural heritage. The church's simple yet elegant design was a serene setting for contemplation.
Reykjavik Escape: The Scientist
Back in Reykjavik, we decided to inject some excitement into our afternoon with a visit to Reykjavik Escape. We chose The Scientist room, intrigued by the challenge of finding a cure for cancer in a limited time. Daniel and I love escape rooms, and this one didn't disappoint. The premise was that we had to steal the cure from its discoverer before he could publish it, so we could claim it for ourselves. A bit cheeky, but all in good fun!

The room was filled with utilitarian furniture, disconnected office equipment, and laboratory apparatus, creating a convincing scientific setting. We worked together, deciphering clues and solving puzzles that tied into the story. Teamwork was essential, and we found ourselves communicating effectively to crack codes and unlock secrets.
It was a thrilling experience, and we managed to escape with time to spare! The sense of accomplishment was fantastic. Daniel was particularly good at spotting hidden clues, while I focused on the logic puzzles. It was a great way to spend an afternoon, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun and engaging activity in Reykjavik.
A Culinary Evening: Messinn and Apotek
For lunch, we headed to Messinn, a seafood restaurant known for its fresh fish dishes served in copper pans. The restaurant had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, and we were eager to try some local cuisine. We ordered the Arctic char and fish stew, both of which were absolutely delicious. The Arctic char had a crispy, honey crust that melted in our mouths, and the fish stew was a unique and flavorful combination of fish and potatoes baked to perfection. The portions were generous, and the flavors were spot on.

In the evening, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Apotek Restaurant, located in a unique setting that once served as a pharmacy. The interior was stunning, with leather, gold chandeliers, wine bottles, and metal chairs creating a sophisticated ambiance. We started with some signature cocktails, which were expertly crafted and delicious. For our main courses, we opted for the lamb tartar and the charcoal-grilled salmon. The lamb tartar was flavorful and well-presented, and the salmon was cooked to perfection, with a lovely smoky flavor.

To cap off the night, we ventured to Skúli Craft Bar, a haven for craft beer enthusiasts. The bar had a relaxed atmosphere and an impressive selection of Icelandic and international brews. With 14 beers on tap and over 130 bottled varieties, there was something to satisfy every palate. Daniel enjoyed a hoppy IPA, while I opted for a classic lager. The bar also had a small square outside, where we enjoyed the cool evening air and reflected on our day's adventures. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day filled with exploration and excitement.

Looking Ahead
Tomorrow is our last day in Reykjavik, and we plan to make the most of it. We'll be visiting Aurora Reykjavik - The Northern Lights Center and The National Gallery of Iceland, hoping to soak up as much culture and art as possible before heading back to Bristol. I'm also looking forward to doing some last-minute souvenir shopping at The Heart of Reykjavik. It's been an incredible trip, and I'm already planning our next adventure. I think Daniel and I will spend the night at Duck & Rose, which I heard has some fantastic Italian inspired dishes.
For now, though, it's time to rest and recharge for our final day. Reykjavik, you've been amazing!
