Day 7: Journey Through Time: Unearthing Ancient Traditions in Maras and Chinchero
Explore the ancient Salt Mines of Maras and the weaving traditions of Chinchero on a captivating journey through Peru's Sacred Valley.

Echoes of the Past in the Sacred Valley
Today was a day of delving deep into the heart of Peruvian history and culture. Leaving behind the familiar streets of Cusco, we ventured into the Sacred Valley, where ancient traditions are not just remembered but lived and breathed. The landscapes were breathtaking, and the experiences were truly enriching, reminding me once again why I love to travel and immerse myself in different cultures.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Something Special Cusco, a charming little place that lived up to its name. Maximilian and I enjoyed some delicious local pastries and strong Peruvian coffee, fueling up for the day's adventures. Sofia was excited and couldn’t wait to explore. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, a perfect start before heading out to the Sacred Valley.
First on our itinerary was the Salt Mine of Maras, a place I had read so much about. As we drove through the winding roads, the scenery transformed from urban sprawl to rolling hills dotted with small villages. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of eucalyptus and the distant sound of rushing water. Finally, we arrived at Maras, and the view was simply stunning.

The Salt Mine of Maras is an ancient complex of thousands of individual salt pans, cascading down the hillside like a giant, surreal staircase. The history of this place is incredible; these salt pans have been in use since pre-Inca times, and the methods of salt extraction have remained virtually unchanged for centuries. It was fascinating to see the local families working the pans, harvesting the salt using techniques passed down through generations. The varying colors of the salt, from brilliant white to earthy browns, created a mosaic that was both beautiful and mesmerizing.
I couldn't resist buying some of the famous pink salt of Maras, known for its unique mineral composition and health benefits. It's amazing to think that this salt, harvested in the same way for hundreds of years, will soon be seasoning our meals back in Heidelberg, a little taste of Peru in our German kitchen. Sofia was very intrigued by the salt mines and asked many questions about how the salt was made and who owned the different pans. It was a great opportunity to teach her about history, geography, and the importance of preserving traditions.
The beauty of Maras lies not just in its stunning visuals, but in its testament to human ingenuity and the enduring power of tradition.
Leaving Maras, we continued our journey to Chinchero, a small town known for its traditional weaving and vibrant Sunday market. The drive was scenic, with views of snow-capped peaks and fertile valleys stretching as far as the eye could see. As we approached Chinchero, I noticed the distinct architecture of the houses, with their red-tiled roofs and adobe walls. The town had a peaceful, almost timeless quality about it.

We arrived in Chinchero in the late morning, just as the town was starting to buzz with activity. Although it wasn't Sunday, when the famous market takes place, there were still plenty of local artisans selling their wares in the main square. The air was filled with the sounds of Quechua, the ancient language of the Incas, and the vibrant colors of the handwoven textiles.
Chinchero is believed to be the birthplace of the rainbow, and it’s easy to see why. Even on a clear day, the colors of the textiles, the landscape, and the traditional clothing of the local people create a vibrant spectrum that is truly captivating. We visited a local weaving cooperative, where we learned about the intricate process of creating these beautiful textiles, from the dyeing of the wool with natural pigments to the complex weaving techniques passed down through generations. I was struck by the skill and artistry of the weavers, and the deep connection they have to their craft.
I couldn't resist purchasing a beautiful handwoven shawl, a piece of art that I will treasure for years to come. It's not just a beautiful garment, but a symbol of the rich cultural heritage of Chinchero and the dedication of its artisans. Sofia even tried her hand at weaving, with the patient guidance of one of the local women. She didn't quite master the technique, but she had a lot of fun and gained a new appreciation for the art of weaving.
For lunch, we stopped at A Mi Manera in Cusco, a delightful restaurant recommended by several locals. The food was delicious, offering a modern twist on traditional Peruvian dishes. I tried the lomo saltado, a classic stir-fry dish with beef, onions, and peppers, while Maximilian opted for the alpaca steak. Sofia enjoyed a simple but tasty pasta dish. The ambiance of the restaurant was cozy and inviting, making it a perfect place to relax and recharge after a busy day of exploring.

After lunch, we indulged in a bit of retail therapy at Boutique Sumac, a charming shop in Cusco known for its unique Peruvian fashion and craftsmanship. I found a beautiful hand-embroidered blouse that I knew would be a perfect addition to my wardrobe. Sofia picked out a colorful alpaca wool hat to keep her warm on our future adventures.

As the day drew to a close, we headed back to our hotel, reflecting on the incredible experiences we had shared. For dinner, we decided to try Tunupa Restaurant, known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine and folkloric show. The restaurant was lively and festive, with music and dancing that showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Andes. The food was delicious, and the show was entertaining, providing a perfect ending to a perfect day. Maximilian was impressed by the variety of dishes and the vibrant atmosphere. He even tried some local delicacies that he had never tasted before.

Tonight, as I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Peru. Tomorrow, we embark on one of the most anticipated legs of our journey: Machu Picchu. I can barely contain my excitement as I think about finally seeing this ancient wonder with my own eyes. I’ve heard so much about it, and I can’t wait to explore its mysteries and learn more about the Inca civilization. We plan to have breakfast at Calle del Medio Restaurante Bar before we head to El Mesón de Don Tomas for lunch and DEVA - Cocina Andina for dinner. I’m sure it will be another unforgettable day filled with wonder and discovery.
But for now, I will cherish the memories of today, the echoes of the past that resonate in the salt pans of Maras and the weaving traditions of Chinchero. These are the moments that make travel so rewarding, the connections we make with different cultures and the stories we bring home with us. And as I drift off to sleep, I can almost hear the sounds of the Andes, the gentle rhythm of life that has endured for centuries, a reminder of the enduring power of tradition and the beauty of the human spirit.
As I reflect on the day, I realize how fortunate I am to share these experiences with my family. Travel is not just about seeing new places, but about creating lasting memories and strengthening the bonds that connect us. And as we continue our journey through Peru, I know that we will continue to learn, grow, and discover together, creating a tapestry of experiences that will enrich our lives for years to come. I’m grateful for every moment, every sight, and every sound, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. I am also grateful that I remembered to pack my travel insurance, but I forgot my portable phone charger and Spanish phrasebook. I will need to buy those tomorrow. I’m also looking forward to visiting Cusco Collection tomorrow to buy more souvenirs.
The Carnival Cusqueño, with its vibrant music, dances, and water games, is happening this month, adding an extra layer of festivity to the city. Although we didn't get to participate directly today, the energy of the celebration was palpable throughout Cusco, reminding us of the rich cultural tapestry that defines this region. It’s a reminder that travel is not just about seeing places but experiencing the traditions and spirit of the local people.
