A Day of Dreams: Machu Picchu's Majesty

Today was the day I had been anticipating since we booked this trip – a visit to the legendary Machupicchu. It's a place that has always captured my imagination, a testament to the ingenuity and spirit of the Inca civilization. I was excited to finally see it with my own eyes and share the experience with my friends.

The day began early, with a hearty breakfast at Calle del Medio Restaurante Bar. The atmosphere was lively, and the restaurant, recently opened, had a modern yet cozy feel. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast – some scrambled eggs with tomatoes and onions, accompanied by a strong coffee. It was the perfect fuel for the adventure ahead.

After breakfast, we made our way to the bus station. The journey to Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu, was an adventure in itself. The bus wound its way through the mountains, offering breathtaking views of the Urubamba River and the surrounding landscapes. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of anticipation building with every turn.

Finally, we arrived in Aguas Calientes. From there, another bus took us up the steep, winding road to Machu Picchu. As we ascended, the anticipation grew, and then, there it was – the lost city of the Incas, perched high on a mountain ridge, shrouded in mist. It was a sight that took my breath away.

We spent the morning exploring the ruins, wandering through the ancient streets and marveling at the precision of the stonework. The sheer scale of the city was awe-inspiring, and I tried to imagine what life must have been like for the people who once called this place home. My friends and I walked along the designed classic circuit, taking in all the views. The mist swirled around us, adding an ethereal quality to the experience. I was so glad I remembered to pack my camera; I was determined to capture every moment.

The magic of Machu Picchu lies not just in its stones, but in the stories it whispers to those who listen.

One of the highlights was the Intihuatana stone, believed to have been a solar clock used by the Incas. Standing there, feeling the energy of this ancient place, I felt a deep connection to the past. It was a truly humbling experience.

The crowds were definitely present, even in March, but it didn’t detract from the overall experience. I found moments of solitude, where I could simply stand and absorb the beauty and energy of Machu Picchu.

For lunch, we headed to El Mesón de Don Tomas in Aguas Calientes. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the menu featured a variety of traditional Peruvian dishes. I decided to try the grilled chicken with potatoes, a classic comfort food that was perfect after a morning of exploring. My friend ordered the Cuy, and while I didn't try it, he assured me it was delicious.

After lunch, we returned to Machu Picchu for another couple of hours. I wanted to soak in every last bit of this magical place. We explored some of the outer areas of the city, discovering hidden corners and enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

Before leaving Machu Picchu, I took a moment to sit on a stone terrace, looking out over the city. The mist had cleared, and the sun was shining, casting a golden glow over the ruins. It was a perfect moment, one that I knew I would cherish forever.

As we descended back to Aguas Calientes, I reflected on the day. Machu Picchu had exceeded all my expectations. It was more than just a collection of ancient stones; it was a place of profound beauty, history, and spirituality. I felt grateful to have had the opportunity to experience it.

In the evening, we celebrated our Machu Picchu adventure with a delicious dinner at DEVA - Cocina Andina in Cusco. The restaurant offered a modern take on traditional Andean cuisine, and the flavors were incredible. I ordered the Lomo Saltado, and it was the best I had ever tasted. Maximilian would love this place!

After dinner, we did a bit of shopping at Cusco Collection, where I picked up a few souvenirs for Sofia and Maximilian. I found a beautiful hand-woven scarf for Sofia and a small replica of Machu Picchu for Maximilian. I hope they will appreciate these little mementos from my trip.

Back at the hotel, I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. Machu Picchu was a dream come true, and I was so glad to have shared it with my friends. I was also looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, which would include a visit to Q'enco Archaeological Complex and the Temple of the Moon. I'm eager to explore more of Cusco's rich history and culture.

Today was a day of wonder, a day of dreams fulfilled. Machu Picchu will forever hold a special place in my heart. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but smile, knowing that I had experienced something truly extraordinary.

I’m also glad that the Inca Trail is set to reopen on April 1st, hopefully meaning that more people will be able to explore this region.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Q'enco Archaeological Complex and the Temple of the Moon. I'm eager to explore more of Cusco's rich history and culture and perhaps enjoy a craft beer at Cholos Craft Beers Cusco.
