Embark on a challenging hike to Jebel El-Kelaa, shop for authentic Moroccan clothes, and savor local flavors in Chefchaouen.
Reaching New Heights in Chefchaouen
Today was all about embracing the adventurous spirit of Chefchaouen. With my friends, I set out to conquer the Jebel El-Kelaa Summit, a hike that promised breathtaking views and a true test of our stamina. We also immersed ourselves in the local culture by exploring the vibrant shops for original Moroccan clothes and indulging in the diverse culinary scene of this blue-washed city.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café & restaurant Meftah. The café offered a delightful start to the day with its homemade breakfast and magnificent views. It was the perfect fuel for our upcoming adventure. I enjoyed some traditional Moroccan pancakes with honey, while my friends opted for a savory tagine. With our appetites satisfied and spirits high, we set off towards Jebel El-Kelaa. I made sure to pack my reusable water bottle, remembering how important it is to stay hydrated, especially during a challenging hike.

The trek to Jebel El-Kelaa Summit was indeed a memorable experience. The trail began with a gentle incline, gradually leading us into steeper paths. The journey to the summit was a testament to our perseverance, rewarded with views that stretched beyond the horizon, reminding us of the beauty and grandeur of the natural world.
The hike was moderately difficult, requiring a good level of physical fitness. There were moments when we had to scramble over rocks and navigate loose gravel, but the well-marked trails made it manageable. I was grateful for my comfortable walking shoes, as they provided the necessary support and grip. About three hours into the hike, the trail became very rugged, with rocks strewn across the path. We took several breaks along the way, not only to catch our breath but also to soak in the breathtaking scenery. The changing light throughout the day painted the landscape in a canvas of ever-shifting colors, making it a photographer’s dream.
Reaching the summit was an exhilarating moment. The panoramic views were simply awe-inspiring, showcasing the stunning blue hues of Chefchaouen against the backdrop of the rugged mountain terrain. We spent some time at the top, taking photos and simply enjoying the sense of accomplishment. It was a perfect day for a hike, with clear weather and a cool breeze. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such natural beauty with my friends. I even spotted some unique flora and fauna, adding to the richness of the experience.
After descending from Jebel El-Kelaa, we were ready for a delicious lunch. We chose Assaada, a restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and reasonable prices. The cozy setting and beautiful Moroccan tiles created a welcoming atmosphere. I opted for a traditional tagine with chicken and vegetables, while my friends tried the couscous and kefta. The food was flavorful and satisfying, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect way to replenish our energy after the challenging hike.

With our bellies full, we decided to explore the local shops for original Moroccan clothes. The narrow, winding streets of Chefchaouen are lined with shops selling everything from handmade leather goods to aromatic spices. We stumbled upon a shop with a beautiful collection of traditional Berber dresses. I tried on a vibrant Hayek, a traditional garment worn by Moroccan women, and felt a connection to the local culture. My friends purchased Djellabas, long, loose robes that are commonly worn by both men and women in Morocco. Bargaining is a common practice, and we had fun haggling for the best prices on our souvenirs.
