Hinchinbrook's Hidden Gems

Today was a beautiful blend of exploration and culinary delights. Hinchinbrook Island continues to surprise and enchant us with its diverse landscapes and delicious local fare. From serene island beaches to panoramic mountain views, and from cozy cafes to welcoming hotels, every moment felt like a discovery.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Wild Local in Ingham. It’s always a pleasure to support local businesses, and Wild Local didn’t disappoint. Maximilian and I enjoyed their specialty coffee, while Sofia devoured a stack of pancakes with local organic ice cream. The cafe had a vibrant atmosphere, and it was clear that it’s a favorite spot for both locals and tourists. It's amazing to see how a world-traveled chef can create such a unique cafe with fresh seafood and Australian bush flavors.

After breakfast, we set off to explore Agnes Island. The ferry ride itself was an adventure, with the salty breeze and the stunning views of Hinchinbrook's coastline. Agnes Island is a small island just a few hundred meters east of Hinchinbrook Island. At low tide, you can even walk to it from Banksia Bay. We spent the morning strolling along the beach, collecting seashells, and soaking up the sun. The island is a haven for nesting seabirds, so we made sure to keep a respectful distance. Sofia was particularly fascinated by the rock formations and the little crabs scuttling about. I couldn't help but think about my childhood summers in the Finnish archipelago, where island hopping was a way of life. It's wonderful to share these kinds of experiences with Sofia, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Sometimes, the most memorable moments are found in the simplest of pleasures: a quiet beach, a stunning view, and delicious food shared with loved ones.

For lunch, we decided to try Terry and Mamiko's in Cardwell. The drive to Cardwell was scenic, with lush greenery and glimpses of the coast. Terry and Mamiko's is known for its delicious fish and chips, and it certainly lived up to the hype. Maximilian and Sofia shared a large plate of fish and chips, while I opted for a grilled fish salad. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the chips were perfectly crispy. What stood out was the friendly service. It felt like we were dining at a family friend's place. It's these kinds of experiences that make traveling so rewarding. It reminds me of the small family-run restaurants in Savonlinna, where the warmth of the hosts is as memorable as the food itself.

After our satisfying lunch, we drove back towards Ingham to visit McClellands Lookout. The drive up the mountain was an adventure in itself, with winding roads and breathtaking views at every turn. McClellands Lookout offers panoramic views of Halifax Bay and the Palm Island Group. The short walk to the lookout was easy, even for Sofia, and the view was simply stunning. We spent some time reading the information boards, learning about the local history and facts. The lookout is wheelchair accessible, which is a great feature. The cooler climate at the lookout was a welcome change from the coastal heat. It was the perfect spot to take some family photos and soak in the beauty of the region.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to the Marine Hotel for dinner. It was a cozy and welcoming place, perfect for a relaxing evening. The menu offered a variety of options, and we all found something to our liking. Maximilian chose a steak, Sofia had pasta, and I enjoyed a fresh seafood dish. The portions were generous, and the food was delicious. It felt like a classic Australian pub, with a friendly atmosphere and hearty meals. While Maximilian and Sofia enjoyed a dessert, I savored a glass of local wine, reflecting on the day's adventures.

To cap off the evening, Maximilian and I decided to stop by Hotel Hinchinbrook for a quick drink. Sofia was already fast asleep, so we left her in the capable hands of my husband while I quickly went to the bar. Hotel Hinchinbrook has an iconic part of Ingham's pub culture. The atmosphere was lively, and the staff was friendly. It was a great way to unwind and soak in the local vibe.

Today was a perfect example of what makes Hinchinbrook Island so special: the combination of natural beauty, delicious food, and warm hospitality. We're already looking forward to tomorrow, where we plan to explore Zoe Bay Campgrounds and Cardwell Lookout. Before that, we'll have breakfast at Lucinda Cove Resort, lunch at Vista Hinchinbrook and dinner at Hotel Hinchinbrook. I'm also hoping to pick up a few souvenirs at Prices Plus Ingham.
As I write this, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Hinchinbrook Island has captured our hearts, and we're excited to see what tomorrow brings.
