Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Spidsbergseter Resort Rondane.
The spread was impressive, offering everything from fresh pastries to traditional Norwegian fare. Fuelled up for the day, we set off towards Dovre National Park, eager to explore its famed panoramic viewpoints. Maximilian had meticulously planned our route, ensuring we wouldn't miss any of the must-see spots.
Sofia, ever the enthusiastic explorer, was particularly excited about the prospect of spotting some local wildlife.

The drive to Dovre was scenic in itself. As we approached the park, the landscape transformed into a rugged expanse of mountains and valleys. Patches of snow still clung to the higher peaks, a reminder of the long winter months. The weather was a mix of sunshine and clouds, creating a dramatic play of light across the landscape. I must admit I forgot to pack my portable charger, so I hope my camera will last throughout the day!

Our first stop was at one of the panoramic viewpoints overlooking the vast expanse of Dovre National Park. The view was simply awe-inspiring.
From our vantage point, we could see for miles in every direction, the rolling hills and distant mountain peaks creating a tapestry of natural beauty.
Sofia was thrilled, pointing out every little detail she could spot, from tiny streams to grazing reindeer in the distance. Maximilian, with his keen eye for photography, was busy capturing the stunning scenery.
I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me as I took in the majestic view.

It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.

We spent a good hour at the viewpoint, soaking in the scenery and snapping photos. Sofia even tried her hand at landscape photography, capturing some surprisingly beautiful shots with my camera. It was heartwarming to see her connect with nature in such a profound way. The views reminded me of the Finnish countryside where I grew up, with its endless forests and serene lakes. It felt like a piece of home, so far away from Heidelberg.

Afterward, we decided to explore some of the hiking trails in Dovre National Park. We chose a relatively easy trail, suitable for families with young children. The path wound its way through a forest of birch and pine trees, the air filled with the scent of pine needles and damp earth. As we hiked, we kept an eye out for local wildlife, hoping to spot some of the park's famous musk oxen or wild reindeer.

While we didn't encounter any large mammals, we did spot several interesting bird species, including the vibrant bluethroat and the elusive willow warbler. Sofia was particularly fascinated by the colorful wildflowers that dotted the landscape, each one a tiny work of art. I tried to explain to Sofia about The Pilgrim Path, which passes through the Dovre National Park, but I am not sure she fully understood the historical significance!

For lunch, we stopped at Rondane Gjestegård, a charming restaurant nestled in the heart of the park.
The restaurant had a cozy, rustic atmosphere, with wooden beams and a crackling fireplace. We ordered traditional Norwegian dishes, including reindeer stew and smoked salmon sandwiches. The food was delicious, hearty, and satisfying, perfect for refueling after our hike.
Maximilian particularly enjoyed the local beer, brewed with mountain herbs and spices. Sofia, of course, opted for a plate of waffles with lingonberry jam, a Norwegian classic.

In the afternoon, we decided to visit Lundes turisthandel, a local shop known for its traditional crafts and souvenirs. The shop was a treasure trove of Norwegian culture, with everything from hand-knitted sweaters to wooden trolls. I was particularly drawn to the intricate rosemaling, a traditional form of Norwegian decorative painting.
Sofia, on the other hand, was fascinated by the selection of Viking helmets and swords, imagining herself as a fierce warrior.
We ended up buying a few souvenirs, including a hand-carved wooden reindeer for Sofia and a beautiful rosemaling plate for our home in Heidelberg. I was hoping to spot Ida, the hiking cat, but no such luck!

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Rondane Fjellstue for dinner. This mountain lodge, built in the early 20th century, exuded history and charm. The dinner was a delightful affair, with traditional Norwegian dishes served in a cozy, intimate setting. The hearty meal was the perfect end to a day filled with exploration and natural beauty.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning a hike up Storronden, one of the highest peaks in Rondane National Park. The weather forecast looks promising, and we're all excited about the challenge. We'll also be visiting the River Intersection Point, a unique natural landmark where several rivers converge. And, if we have time, we might check out Tyst, a local bar, for a relaxing evening drink. It should be another exciting day, and I can't wait to share it with you all.

Today was a reminder of the simple joys of spending time in nature with loved ones. The stunning landscapes, the fresh mountain air, and the shared experiences created memories that we will cherish for a lifetime. Dovre National Park is truly a special place, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to explore its wonders with my family.

Back at our campsite, as I reflect on the day, I realize how fortunate I am to be able to share these experiences with Maximilian and Sofia. These moments of connection, surrounded by the beauty of nature, are what truly matter. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel excited about what tomorrow will bring.
