Family Adventure in Rondane National Park, Norway
Day 1: First Day Wonders: Rondane's Scenic Route Unveiled
Discover Rondane National Park's stunning vistas at Sohlbergplassen and the majestic Vesleulfossen waterfall on our family's first day.
A Warm Welcome to Rondane
After months of planning and anticipation, our family adventure in Rondane National Park has finally begun! The journey from Heidelberg to Oslo and then the drive to Rondane was long, but as soon as we entered the park, the stunning landscapes made every mile worth it. Today was all about soaking in the initial impressions, and Rondane certainly didn't disappoint. The crisp, clean air, the towering mountains, and the promise of untouched wilderness have already captivated us. I'm eager to share our experiences as we delve deeper into this natural wonderland.
Our day started early with breakfast at Rondane Gjestegård. The spread was delightful – a mix of traditional Norwegian fare and familiar breakfast staples. I opted for some local cheese and freshly baked bread, while Maximilian enjoyed the eggs and Sofia couldn't get enough of the waffles. The cozy atmosphere of the Gjestegård was the perfect way to fuel up for our first day of exploration.
After breakfast, our first stop was Sohlbergplassen, a viewpoint offering panoramic views of Atnsjøen Lake framed by the majestic Rondane mountains. Designed by architect Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk, the platform blends seamlessly with the natural surroundings, allowing the soft forest floor to receive both water and light. As we stepped onto the platform, we were immediately struck by the breathtaking vista. The serene lake mirrored the sky, and the mountains stood tall and proud in the distance. It was easy to see why this spot inspired Harald Sohlberg's famous painting, Winter Night in the Mountains.

Sofia was particularly excited, pointing out different shapes in the mountains and asking endless questions about the landscape. Maximilian, ever the photographer, snapped away, trying to capture the beauty of the scene. I simply stood there, taking it all in, feeling a sense of peace and connection to nature that I hadn't experienced in a long time. I even managed to capture a few good shots myself, though I doubt they'll do justice to the real thing. The weather in June is quite mild, but the wind was a bit chilly, so we made sure to bundle up in our warm clothes.
Next on our itinerary was Vesleulfossen, reportedly one of Rondane National Park's tallest waterfalls. The drive to the waterfall was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering glimpses of the stunning landscape. When we arrived, we parked the car and embarked on a short hike to reach the falls. The trail was well-marked but a bit steep in places, so we took our time, enjoying the surrounding forest. The sound of rushing water grew louder as we approached, and soon enough, we were greeted by the sight of Vesleulfossen cascading down the rocks.

The waterfall was indeed impressive, with the water plunging down the cliffs in a dramatic display of nature's power. Sofia was mesmerized, watching the water dance and sparkle in the sunlight. We spent some time taking photos and simply enjoying the cool mist on our faces. It was a refreshing and invigorating experience, a perfect reminder of the raw beauty of the Norwegian wilderness. I was glad I remembered to pack our hiking boots; they were essential for navigating the rocky terrain. I had read that the hike to the waterfall was along the Peer Gynt Trail, and it certainly felt like stepping into a fairytale.
For lunch, we stopped at Rondane Fjellstue, a charming mountain lodge with a cozy atmosphere. We enjoyed a hearty meal of traditional Norwegian dishes, including a delicious reindeer stew that warmed us from the inside out. Sofia opted for a simpler meal of sausages and fries, which she devoured with gusto. The Fjellstue provided a welcome respite from our outdoor adventures, a place to relax and recharge before continuing our journey.

After lunch, we made a quick stop at Mysusæter butikk, a local shop in the village of Mysusæter. We wanted to pick up a few essentials and perhaps some local delicacies to enjoy later. The shop was quaint and charming, offering a variety of fresh produce, regional specialties, and everyday items. We stocked up on some artisanal cheeses, cured meats, and fresh fruits, as well as a few souvenirs to remember our trip. The shopkeeper was incredibly friendly, offering recommendations and sharing stories about the area. It was a lovely glimpse into the local culture and a chance to support the community.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Rondane Haukliseter Fjellhotel for dinner. The hotel is located at the entrance to Rondane National Park, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The dining area was elegant and inviting, and the menu featured a range of gourmet dishes made with local ingredients. We savored every bite, reflecting on the incredible experiences of the day. Sofia, tired from our adventures, fell asleep in her chair before dessert arrived. It was a sweet and poignant moment, a reminder of the simple joys of family travel.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore Rondane National Park with my family. The beauty of the landscape, the warmth of the people, and the sense of adventure have already made this trip unforgettable. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Rondasvingen and Klokkesteinen, hoping for more breathtaking views and memorable experiences. I'm also looking forward to trying Aquavitfjøset Spidsbergseter, a local bar, for a taste of Norwegian nightlife.
The weather forecast predicts more of the same – mild temperatures with a chance of rain – so we'll be sure to pack our rain gear and be prepared for anything. I'm also a little worried about the portable charger I forgot to pack; hopefully, we'll find a way to keep our devices charged so I can continue to document our adventures. For now, though, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of exploration. I can't wait to see what Rondane has in store for us.
Sometimes, the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take.
One thing that struck me today was the silence. Coming from the relatively busy city of Heidelberg, the quiet of Rondane was almost overwhelming at first. It was a silence punctuated only by the sounds of nature – the rushing water of Vesleulfossen, the wind rustling through the trees, the occasional call of a bird. It was a silence that allowed for reflection, for contemplation, for a deeper connection to the natural world. I found myself thinking about my childhood in Finland, about the vast forests and serene lakes that shaped my early years. This trip to Rondane feels like a homecoming of sorts, a return to the landscapes that resonate deep within my soul.
Maximilian, too, seemed to appreciate the tranquility of Rondane. He's always been drawn to the mountains, to the challenge of climbing and exploring. He's eager to tackle some of the more strenuous hikes in the park, to push himself physically and mentally. I admire his adventurous spirit, his willingness to embrace the unknown. I know that this trip will be as much about personal growth for him as it is about family bonding.
Sofia, of course, is in her element. She loves being outdoors, exploring new places, and discovering new things. Her curiosity is boundless, her energy seemingly inexhaustible. She's a constant source of joy and inspiration, reminding us to appreciate the simple things in life. I cherish these moments with her, knowing that they will shape her into a strong, independent, and compassionate young woman. I hope that this trip will instill in her a love for nature, a respect for the environment, and a sense of responsibility towards the planet.
As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm reminded of the importance of sustainable travel. We're committed to minimizing our impact on the environment, to respecting the local culture, and to supporting the local economy. We're mindful of our consumption, reducing waste whenever possible, and choosing eco-friendly options whenever available. We believe that travel should be a force for good, a way to connect with the world and to contribute to its well-being. I hope that through this blog, I can inspire others to travel more sustainably, to make conscious choices that benefit both the planet and the people who call these places home.
Before signing off, I wanted to share a few practical tips for anyone planning a trip to Rondane National Park. First, be sure to pack for all types of weather conditions. The weather in the mountains can change quickly, so it's important to be prepared for anything. Second, bring sturdy hiking boots and comfortable clothing. Fourth, book your accommodations in advance, especially if you're traveling during the peak season. Fifth, be respectful of the environment and follow Leave No Trace principles. Finally, be open to new experiences and embrace the unexpected. Rondane National Park is a place of wonder and adventure, and you never know what you might discover. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings! The forecast is calling for rain and snow, so we will be sure to dress warmly. I am also looking forward to our meals tomorrow at Rondane Høyfjellshotell, Spidsbergseter Resort Rondane, and Parken Grill & Cafèbar. I've heard great things about the local cuisine, and I can't wait to try it for myself. We might even stop by Aquavitfjøset Spidsbergseter for a drink. I am really looking forward to tomorrow.
