Today was a day of delightful surprises and unexpected discoveries here in Rondane National Park. We set out with a loose plan, but as often happens, the day unfolded in ways we couldn't have predicted, leading to some truly memorable experiences. It's amazing how a change of scenery can bring new perspectives and open your eyes to the simple joys around you.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Rondane Gjestegård. After our flight and drive here from Heidelberg, it feels so good to wake up in the fresh mountain air. The spread was lovely, a mix of traditional Norwegian fare and familiar breakfast staples. Maximilian particularly enjoyed the freshly baked bread, while Sofia couldn't get enough of the local berries. I savored a strong cup of coffee, appreciating the quiet ambiance of the Gjestegård before the day's adventures began. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made us feel right at home, a perfect start to the day.

With our bellies full, we set off to see Rullesteinen, a peculiar and fascinating rock formation. It's essentially a massive boulder left behind by glacial activity, and it sits perched in a way that seems almost impossible. The sheer size of the stone was impressive, and Sofia was immediately captivated, running around it and trying to estimate how many of her it would take to reach the top. Maximilian, ever the engineer, was intrigued by the physics of it all, pondering how it had managed to stay balanced for so long. I just enjoyed the view and the crisp mountain air, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such a unique natural wonder.

After our geological excursion, we decided to embrace a little retail therapy at AMFI Otta. I know, it might seem strange to go shopping in the middle of a national park adventure, but sometimes a girl just needs a little browsing! Plus, we realized we had forgotten a few essentials – like a proper portable charger for my camera, crucial for capturing all these stunning landscapes. The shopping center was surprisingly well-stocked, with a variety of stores ranging from clothing boutiques to outdoor gear shops. Sofia was thrilled to find a new storybook in the bookstore, while Maximilian picked up a sturdy hiking map for our upcoming treks. I managed to find a lovely hand-knitted scarf, a perfect souvenir to remind me of our time in Norway.

One of the highlights was stumbling upon Mester Grønn, a flower shop bursting with color and fragrance. I couldn't resist buying a small bouquet of local wildflowers, their vibrant hues a cheerful contrast to the rugged landscape outside. It's funny how a simple bunch of flowers can brighten up your day and bring a touch of nature indoors.

For lunch, we stopped at Rondane Høyfjellshotell. The hotel itself looked quite inviting, and the restaurant offered stunning views of the surrounding mountains. We opted for some traditional Norwegian sandwiches, smørbrød, piled high with various toppings. Sofia, however, stuck to her usual – a simple cheese sandwich, but even that tasted better with the mountain vista as a backdrop. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and it was a pleasant respite from our outdoor adventures.

As evening approached, we made our way to Spidsbergseter Resort Rondane for dinner. The resort had a cozy, rustic charm, and the dining room was warm and inviting. We decided to try their set menu, which featured local specialties. Maximilian particularly enjoyed the reindeer stew, a hearty and flavorful dish that was perfect for a chilly evening. Sofia, surprisingly, devoured the fish cakes, declaring them the best she'd ever had. I savored every bite of the cloudberry dessert, a sweet and tangy treat that was a true taste of Norway.

Before heading back to our campsite, we took a stroll around the resort grounds, enjoying the tranquil atmosphere and the stunning views. The air was crisp and clean, and the stars were beginning to twinkle in the darkening sky. It was the perfect end to a day filled with unexpected treasures and delightful discoveries.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that some of the best travel experiences are the ones that veer off course. While having a plan is important, it's equally important to be open to spontaneity and embrace the unexpected. Whether it's stumbling upon a massive rolling stone, finding a perfect souvenir, or savoring a delicious meal, these unplanned moments often become the most cherished memories.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Jora Bru Dombås and Smukksjøen. I am excited to see what adventures tomorrow brings!

What started as a simple day of sightseeing turned into a treasure hunt of unique experiences. It reminds me of our move from Savonlinna to Heidelberg – a leap of faith that opened up a world of possibilities we never imagined.
