Today was a day of venturing into the heart of Ruka-Kuusamo, where the serene Finnish wilderness whispered stories of nature’s untouched beauty. Away from the ski slopes, we sought out the quiet corners of this region, where the landscape unfolds in a tapestry of wetlands, cascading waters, and hidden culinary gems. It’s these moments, far from the crowds, that truly connect you to the soul of a place.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Zone. The kids were excited, especially Sofia, who always looks forward to the buffet. Maximilian and I enjoyed some traditional Finnish pastries, fueling up for our day of exploration. It’s funny how even after years of living in Germany, I still crave the tastes of my homeland. Perhaps it’s a genetic predisposition, or maybe it’s just the comforting reminder of my childhood in Savonlinna.

First on our agenda was the Bird Watching Tower of Oivanki Wetlands. Driving there, the landscape transformed into a mosaic of golden and amber hues, a clear sign that autumn was in full swing. I made a mental note to buy a new memory card; I had forgotten one, and I didn’t want to miss any photo opportunities. The drive itself was peaceful, with only the occasional car passing by, reinforcing the feeling of being wonderfully remote.

Arriving at the Oivanki Wetlands, we were immediately greeted by the crisp, clean air and the expansive view of the marshlands. The tower stood as a silent sentinel, promising panoramic views of the diverse birdlife and the surrounding ecosystem. Sofia was particularly thrilled, armed with her binoculars, ready to spot any feathered friends. As we ascended the tower, the wetlands unfolded beneath us, a shimmering expanse reflecting the sky.

I must admit, I’m no ornithologist, but even I could appreciate the variety of birds that call this place home. Maximilian, ever the patient one, helped Sofia identify different species, pointing out their unique calls and markings. It was a lovely family moment, sharing in the wonder of nature. I felt a pang of gratitude for these opportunities to connect with my daughter and instill in her a sense of appreciation for the natural world. It reminded me of my own childhood, spending countless hours exploring the forests and lakes around Savonlinna, a connection I was keen to pass on to Sofia.

After our avian adventure, we set off for Putaanköngäs Waterfall. The drive was scenic, taking us through winding roads flanked by dense forests. As we neared the waterfall, the sound of rushing water grew louder, heightening our anticipation. The path to the waterfall was a bit of a trek, but nothing we couldn’t handle. Sofia, with her boundless energy, skipped ahead, eager to reach our destination. The trail was well-maintained, but I was glad we wore our hiking boots, as some parts were a bit slippery.

Reaching Putaanköngäs, we were greeted by a stunning cascade of water plunging into a rocky pool below. The waterfall wasn't massive, but it possessed a raw, untamed beauty that was captivating. The surrounding forest, painted in autumn colors, added to the picturesque scene. We spent some time simply admiring the view, listening to the soothing sounds of the water, and breathing in the fresh, pine-scented air. It was a perfect spot for reflection, a moment to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature. I snapped a few photos, trying to capture the essence of this hidden gem, but as always, the real experience was far more profound than any picture could convey.

Lunch was at RUOK, a burger joint known for its Lappish Highland cattle burgers cooked on a charcoal grill. The burgers were indeed delicious, juicy, and full of flavor. Sofia opted for the kids' meal, while Maximilian and I decided to try the Kuusamo burger, made with reindeer meat and local cheese. It was an interesting twist on a classic, and I appreciated the use of regional ingredients. The atmosphere was casual and relaxed, perfect for a midday refuel.

In the late afternoon, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, we decided to visit Cafe-Bar Twin Peak for a quick drink. It was a cozy spot, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. I opted for a traditional Finnish beer, while Maximilian enjoyed a glass of local cider. Sofia, of course, chose a non-alcoholic beverage. The bar had a relaxed, friendly vibe, and we chatted with some locals, exchanging stories and recommendations. It was a nice way to get a sense of the community and learn more about the area.

For dinner, we chose Restaurant Piste, known for its diverse menu and lively entertainment. The restaurant had a warm and inviting ambiance, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We started with some appetizers, sampling local delicacies like smoked salmon and reindeer pate. For the main course, I opted for the grilled whitefish, while Maximilian chose the gourmet hamburger. Sofia, always a fan of chicken, went for the chicken wings. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. As the evening progressed, the restaurant transformed into a vibrant nightlife venue, with live music adding to the festive atmosphere.

As we headed back to Ski-Inn RukaVillage, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. Today had been a perfect blend of nature, culture, and culinary delights. We had explored hidden gems, connected with the local community, and created lasting memories as a family. It reinforced my belief that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new things and connecting with the world around us.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Erola's Reindeer and Tree Farm and the Ristikallio Cliffs. Sofia is especially excited about seeing the reindeers. I'm looking forward to exploring more of Ruka-Kuusamo's natural beauty and sharing it with my family. I also want to check out the Shopping center Kumpare for some local souvenirs.

As a freelance translator, I often find myself glued to my computer, juggling deadlines and managing projects. While I love my work, it can be isolating at times. This trip has allowed me to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the natural world, and with my family. It’s a reminder of what truly matters in life: relationships, experiences, and a deep appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us. And perhaps, it will even inspire me to incorporate more sustainable practices into my daily life, both at home and in my travels. After all, preserving these natural wonders for future generations is a responsibility we all share.
