Finding Harmony in Art and Nature

Today was a day of quiet contemplation and artistic immersion here on Naoshima. I set out to explore some of the island’s more subtle offerings, places where art and nature intertwine to create a sense of harmony. It’s amazing how this island, once a quiet fishing community, has transformed into a global hub for contemporary art, all while retaining its peaceful charm. The blend of modern installations and traditional Japanese culture is something I find incredibly inspiring.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at APRON CAFE. I savored a simple yet satisfying meal of locally sourced ingredients, which gave me the energy I needed for the day's explorations. It’s wonderful to see how Naoshima embraces local produce and sustainable practices, a reflection of the deep respect for nature that permeates Japanese culture.

Naoshima Hall: A Community's Heart

My first stop was Naoshima Hall, a community center designed by architect Hiroshi Sambuichi. The hall is more than just a building; it’s a space where the community gathers, interacts, and celebrates. Sambuichi's design philosophy, which he calls 'moving materials,' focuses on incorporating natural elements like wind, air, water, and sun into the architecture. The building is raised slightly off the ground and features a traditional gabled timber roof, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. Inside, the use of traditional Japanese materials like *washi* paper and *shikkui* plaster creates a serene and inviting atmosphere.

The architecture itself is a work of art, blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment. I learned that Sambuichi meticulously researched the island's climate and topography to create a space that harmonizes with nature. The hall is designed to maximize natural ventilation and daylight, reducing the need for artificial climate control. It's a testament to how architecture can be both functional and environmentally conscious.

Benesse House Park: Art in the Open Air

Next, I ventured to Benesse House Park, an open-air museum showcasing a variety of contemporary sculptures and installations. As I wandered through the park, I was struck by how the art interacted with the natural surroundings. Yayoi Kusama's iconic Yellow Pumpkin sits at the end of a pier, its vibrant polka dots contrasting against the blue sea and sky. Other works, like those by Richard Long, use natural materials to create sculptures that blend seamlessly with the landscape.

The park offers stunning panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea. I took my time strolling along the walking paths, discovering hidden art pieces tucked away in unexpected corners. The integration of art and nature is what makes Benesse House Park so special. It's a place where you can appreciate both the beauty of the natural world and the creativity of human expression.

One of the highlights was encountering works by Karel Appel and Niki de Saint Phalle, known for their colorful and whimsical creations. Their sculptures added a playful touch to the park, reminding me of the importance of joy and imagination in art.

A Moment of Reflection: Drink a Cup of Tea

In the late afternoon, I sought out a more contemplative experience. I decided to visit the attraction known as Drink a Cup of Tea, a work by artist Kazuo Katase. This installation, shaped like a traditional Japanese teacup, encourages visitors to slow down, reflect, and appreciate the present moment. The artist was inspired by a Zen monk's ritual, Eat it and drink a cup of tea, which embodies the spirit of seeking truth through simple actions.

I sat by the teacup, listening to the gentle sounds of the water and taking in the serene surroundings. It was a perfect opportunity to clear my mind and connect with the island's tranquil energy. I found myself pondering the importance of slowing down and finding beauty in the everyday moments. It reminded me of something Astrid often says, about finding joy in simplicity.

Culinary Delights: Lunch and Dinner

For lunch, I enjoyed a delightful meal at Yuunagi. This restaurant, conveniently located near the port, is known for its fresh seafood and traditional Japanese cuisine. I savored a special dish of fried fish, cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. It was a perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploring.

As evening approached, I made my way to New Olympia for dinner. This cozy sushi restaurant, run by a father-son duo, offers a delightful *kaiseki* multi-course dinner experience. The server, who was proficient in English, guided me through the menu, recommending various seasonal dishes. I savored the fresh sashimi, seared mackerel, and fried yellowfin, each dish a testament to the chef's skill and dedication to quality. The tranquil ambiance of the old shop added to the overall dining experience.

A Touch of Shopping: Mikazukishoten

Before dinner, I took some time to explore the local shops. I stopped by Mikazukishoten, a charming coffee stand and souvenir store. I enjoyed a cup of expertly brewed coffee and browsed the selection of local crafts and art prints. It's a great place to pick up a unique memento of my time on Naoshima.

Looking Ahead

As I reflect on today's experiences, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore Naoshima's artistic and cultural treasures. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Art House Project: Go'o Shrine and the Valley Gallery, continuing my exploration of the island's unique blend of art and architecture. I also hope to spend some time at Tsunosaki, soaking in the natural beauty of the coastline. And perhaps, in the evening, I'll unwind with a drink at Little Plum, a local bar known for its inviting atmosphere.

Naoshima continues to surprise and inspire me with its unique blend of art, nature, and culture. It's a place where I can slow down, reflect, and connect with my creative spirit. I look forward to sharing more of my adventures with you tomorrow.
