Naoshima's Hidden Gems
Today was a day of venturing further into Naoshima's artistic and spiritual landscape. I set out to explore some of the island's more secluded spots, eager to uncover the stories and beauty they held. It was a day filled with reflection, appreciation, and a deeper connection to this unique island.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Ippo. The aroma of freshly brewed Japanese coffee filled the air as I stepped inside the quaint café. An elderly Japanese lady greeted me with a warm smile, making me feel instantly at home. I savored a cup of their meticulously brewed coffee along with a traditional snack, soaking in the cozy atmosphere before embarking on my artistic journey. The cafe's homey decor and the friendly staff created a nurturing environment, perfect for starting a day of exploration. I made a mental note to bring Astrid here one day; she would absolutely adore the simplicity and warmth of this place. It reminded me of our favorite little coffee shop back in Silkeborg.

With renewed energy, I headed towards the Art House Project, specifically the Go'o Shrine. The walk itself was a meditative experience, the island's serene beauty unfolding with each step. As I approached the shrine, I was immediately struck by the seamless blend of traditional architecture and contemporary art. The Go'o Shrine is a reinterpretation of a traditional Shinto shrine within the context of contemporary art, maintaining the essential form of a shrine while infusing it with modern artistic concepts. It was originally a place of worship for the local community, but was reconstructed with artistic elements as part of the Art House Project, transforming it into a work of art. I climbed the glass staircase that descends into an underground chamber, a symbolic threshold blurring the lines between the visible and invisible. The light filtering through the glass steps created shifting patterns, adding to the ethereal atmosphere. It was a profound experience, a convergence of tradition and modernity that left me in deep contemplation.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Leaving the Go'o Shrine, I made my way to the Valley Gallery, Tadao Ando's latest architectural marvel on Naoshima. Nestled in a deep valley, the gallery's angular steel roof and trapezoidal floor plan were in perfect harmony with the landscape. The structure is designed to create an independent architectural space while preserving as much of the existing topography and trees as possible. As I approached the entrance, I passed Yayoi Kusama's 'Narcissus Garden', the mirrored stainless steel spheres reflecting the sky and surrounding greenery. Inside, the gallery was a study in natural illumination, the angled skylights casting shadows on the concrete walls. It was a reflective, meditative space, a microcosm where everything superfluous had been erased, colored by light that shifted with time and the seasons. The Valley Gallery exemplifies Ando's vision of coexistence with nature, creating a space where art, architecture, and the environment are in constant dialogue. It reminded me of the importance of simplicity and allowing natural light to transform a space, something I often try to incorporate in my furniture restoration work.

For lunch, I decided to try Issen. Issen is known for kaiseki cuisine, a multi-course dining experience that emphasizes seasonal ingredients and meticulous presentation. The restaurant is on the ground floor of the Benesse House Museum, and the large windows allowed me to appreciate the view of the Inland Sea and modern art from any seat while enjoying my meal. The restaurant's commitment to authenticity was evident in its carefully curated menu, which showcased local flavors and traditional cooking techniques. Each course was a visual and gastronomic feast, designed to delight the senses. It was a culinary journey that perfectly complemented the artistic explorations of the day.

In the late afternoon, I ventured to Tsunosaki, a scenic spot on the coast. The beauty of the landscape was breathtaking, the sea stretching out before me in an endless expanse of blue. The gentle sound of waves lapping against the shore and the refreshing scent of sea air filled my senses. I spent some time wandering along the coastal paths, taking in the views and reflecting on the day's experiences. It was a peaceful haven, a place to unwind and appreciate the harmony of art and nature. I wished Astrid and Lasse were here with me; they would have loved this tranquil spot.

As evening approached, hunger led me to Chikurin for dinner. The izakaya was cozy and inviting, the warm ambiance and friendly service creating a welcoming atmosphere. I savored traditional Japanese dishes, each bite a burst of local flavors and culinary artistry. The restaurant offered a selection of sake, which paired perfectly with my meal, enhancing the overall dining experience. Chikurin felt like a place where locals gathered to unwind, the communal setting encouraging conversation and connection. It was a delightful immersion into the local culture, a reminder of the simple joys of life.

To cap off the evening, I decided to visit Little Plum, a friendly café-bar near Miyanoura Port. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, the inexpensive food and drinks adding to its charm. Little Plum is known as a place where young locals and tourists could gather in a relaxed atmosphere. I enjoyed a Naoshima beer, savoring the moment and reflecting on the day's adventures. The bar also offers dormitory-style accommodations and a bike rental service. The friendly staff and mellow reggae music created a perfect backdrop for my thoughts. It was a fitting end to a day of exploration and discovery.
