Andrea's Artistic Exploration on Naoshima Island
Day 13: Artful Reflections: A Final Day of Discovery on Naoshima
Concluding my artistic pilgrimage on Naoshima with captivating sights, unique flavors, and serene moments, leaving inspired and reflective.
Farewell, Naoshima!
As my artistic exploration on Naoshima Island draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I've undertaken. Today was a day of tying up loose ends, revisiting favorite spots, and discovering a few hidden gems I'd somehow missed. The sun shone brightly, casting a warm glow over the island as I set out for my final day of exploration. It's hard to believe my time here is already over; it feels like just yesterday I was stepping off the ferry, eager to dive into the island's vibrant art scene.
My morning began, as many mornings here have, with a delightful breakfast at SPARKY'S Coffee. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of their mentaiko toast was the perfect way to start the day. It's become a comforting ritual, a little slice of normalcy amidst the extraordinary art that surrounds me. I sat outside, enjoying the gentle breeze and watching the locals go about their day, feeling a sense of peace and contentment wash over me. I made a mental note to try and recreate this breakfast back in Silkeborg for Astrid and Lasse; they would absolutely love it.

After breakfast, I decided to venture slightly beyond Naoshima itself. I hopped on a ferry to Uno Port, just a short ride away, to see the Chinu – the Black Sea Bream of Uno. This massive sculpture, crafted entirely from recycled materials found on the shores of the Seto Inland Sea, is a testament to the power of art to transform discarded objects into something beautiful and thought-provoking. It's quite impressive to see up close, the intricate details and vibrant colors popping against the backdrop of the harbor. The sculpture serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of environmental responsibility, something I deeply value. It made me think about the small ways we try to be sustainable back home, from composting to recycling, and how every little bit counts.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Back on Naoshima, I felt a pull to explore more of the island's natural beauty. I decided to visit the Shihōzashi Sightseeing Tower, perched high above the landscape of Shodoshima. The views from the top were simply breathtaking. From this vantage point, I could see the rolling hills, the shimmering Seto Inland Sea, and the distant islands dotting the horizon. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to soak in the beauty of the natural world and reflect on my experiences here. I spent a good hour at the tower, taking photographs and simply enjoying the peace and quiet. It reminded me of hiking in the Danish Lake District with Astrid and Lasse, the feeling of being surrounded by nature and the sense of accomplishment after reaching a scenic viewpoint.

For lunch, I sought out a local favorite, maimai. This charming spot is known for its Hamachi burger, a local specialty made with Japanese amberjack. I had heard rave reviews and was eager to try it for myself. The burger was indeed delicious, the fish fresh and flavorful, and the special tartar sauce adding a delightful tang. It was a satisfying and authentic culinary experience, a taste of Naoshima that I won't soon forget. I made a mental note to try and find a similar recipe when I return home; perhaps I can recreate a little bit of Naoshima in my own kitchen.

In the afternoon, I decided to revisit one of my favorite spots on the island, the Walking Ark. This open-air museum is a collection of stunning sculptures and artistic exhibits, all integrated into the natural landscape. It's a place where art and nature intertwine, creating a serene and inspirational environment. I wandered through the grounds, admiring the sculptures and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. I even spotted a few of the resident cats, lounging in the sun and adding a touch of whimsy to the scene. The Walking Ark is a testament to the power of art to transform a space and create a sense of wonder.

Before dinner, I stopped by Akaito Coffee, a cozy haven known for its freshly brewed coffee and literary ambiance. I savored a cup of their expertly crafted coffee, surrounded by the scent of old books and the murmur of quiet conversation. It was the perfect place to relax and reflect on my journey. As I sat there, I thought about how much I've enjoyed discovering the local coffee culture here, from the traditional Japanese coffee houses to the modern cafes like Akaito. It's a reminder that even in the most artistic and avant-garde settings, there's always room for simple pleasures.

For my final dinner on Naoshima, I chose Yayoda, a seafood restaurant that embodies the essence of Japanese culinary artistry. The restaurant focuses on fresh, locally sourced seafood, offering an authentic dining experience. The ambiance was warm and inviting, reflecting traditional Japanese aesthetics. I savored each dish, knowing that this would be my last taste of Naoshima's culinary delights for a while. The flavors were exquisite, the seafood incredibly fresh, and the presentation impeccable. It was a fitting end to my gastronomic adventures on the island. The staff were incredibly kind, and I felt a pang of sadness knowing I wouldn't be returning tomorrow.

As I walked back to My Lodge Naoshima, the stars twinkled above me, and the gentle sound of the waves lapped against the shore. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had here, the art I've seen, the people I've met, and the memories I've made. Tomorrow, I begin my journey back to Denmark, back to Astrid and Lasse, and back to my workshop in Silkeborg. But I know that a part of me will always remain on Naoshima, wandering through its art museums, strolling along its beaches, and savoring its unique blend of art, nature, and culture. This trip has reaffirmed my belief in the power of travel to broaden our horizons, challenge our perspectives, and enrich our lives. And I can't wait to share my experiences with Astrid and Lasse, and perhaps even inspire them to embark on their own artistic explorations.
Until next time, Naoshima. Arrivederci!
