Day 12: Art, Serenity, and Sunset Cocktails: A Day of Discovery on Naoshima
Immerse yourself in Naoshima's art scene with visits to Yokobou Park, Honmura Lounge, and Benesse House Museum, ending with sunset drinks.
Naoshima's Embrace: Art, Nature, and Twilight Delights
Today was a day of contrasts and harmonies, a perfect encapsulation of what makes Naoshima so special. From tranquil parks to thought-provoking art spaces and ending with a relaxing drink, it was a journey for the senses. It felt like one of those days where everything just flowed, each experience building on the last to create a cohesive and fulfilling whole.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at APRON CAFE. I decided to go with their recommendation and try the set breakfast. What arrived was a symphony of local flavours, each ingredient singing in harmony with the others. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration.
Yokobou Park: A Morning Stroll Amidst Nature's Canvas
After breakfast, I decided to embrace the natural beauty of Naoshima with a visit to Yokobou Park. I hadn't packed my sunscreen, a rather silly oversight considering the intense summer sun, but I wasn't going to let that deter me. As I walked through the park, the vibrant green foliage provided a welcome contrast to the clear blue sky. The park itself is a testament to the island's dedication to blending art and nature seamlessly. I found myself captivated by the interplay of light and shadow as the sun filtered through the trees, creating an ever-changing canvas of patterns on the ground. It was the perfect place for a contemplative morning stroll, a chance to clear my head and prepare for the artistic encounters that lay ahead. I even took out my sketchbook and attempted to capture some of the scenery, though I'm no artist, I enjoy the attempt.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Honmura Lounge & Archive: Diving Deeper into Naoshima's Art Scene
Next on my list was the Honmura Lounge & Archive, a space that I was particularly excited to visit. Housed in a renovated agricultural cooperative supermarket, the lounge was designed by architect Ryue Nishizawa. It serves as an information center and ticket vendor for the Art House Project. The Art House Project involves transforming empty houses scattered around residential areas into art installations. It's an intriguing concept, weaving the history and memories of the houses into the artworks themselves. I spent a good hour browsing the exhibits, poring over the information about the various Art House Project sites. It was fascinating to learn about the artists' visions and how they had transformed these ordinary spaces into something extraordinary. The lounge itself had a calming atmosphere, a place where you could sit and contemplate the art you were about to experience. I purchased my tickets, feeling a sense of anticipation for what was to come. I also took advantage of their luggage storage service to explore the art housing project more freely.

Benesse House Museum: Where Art and Architecture Converge
The afternoon was dedicated to the Benesse House Museum, a place I had been eagerly anticipating since arriving on Naoshima. Designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando, the museum is a seamless blend of art, architecture, and nature. As I approached the building, I was immediately struck by its minimalist design, a series of concrete walls that seemed to rise organically from the landscape. The museum houses a diverse collection of contemporary art, with pieces by artists from both Japan and abroad. I was particularly drawn to the works inspired by the natural surroundings of Naoshima, pieces that seemed to capture the essence of the island itself. Walking through the museum, I felt a sense of awe at the way Ando had managed to integrate the art with the architecture, creating a space where the two elements were in constant dialogue. The museum also boasts stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea, providing a breathtaking backdrop to the art on display. I spent hours wandering through the galleries, losing myself in the beauty and thought-provoking nature of the artworks. It was an experience that I knew would stay with me long after I left Naoshima.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Terrace Restaurant, located within the Benesse House complex. The restaurant is known for its exquisite cuisine and stunning views, a combination that I found irresistible. I managed to get a table with a prime view of the sea, and as I sat there, sipping a cocktail, I watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colours. The sunset was nothing short of spectacular, a fiery display of orange, pink, and purple that painted the sky in breathtaking hues. It was the perfect end to a day filled with art, nature, and cultural immersion. The food was delicious, fresh and local. They even had some vegetarian options.

Bar SARU: A Nightcap Under the Stars
Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I decided to check out Bar SARU for a nightcap. It was a small, quirky place with a laid-back atmosphere. The bartender was friendly and welcoming, and I soon found myself chatting with him about the island and its art scene. I ordered a local beer and sat at the counter, soaking in the ambience. The bar was dimly lit, with a mix of locals and tourists mingling and laughing. It was the perfect place to unwind after a long day of exploring. I felt a sense of contentment as I sipped my beer, reflecting on all that I had experienced that day. Naoshima had truly exceeded my expectations, and I was already looking forward to what tomorrow would bring.

Tomorrow is my last day here on Naoshima Island and I plan to make the most of it. I plan to visit the Shihōzashi Sightseeing Tower, Chinu - the Black Sea Bream of Uno, and Walking Ark. I plan to have breakfast at SPARKY'S Coffee, lunch at maimai, and dinner at Yayoda. I also plan to visit Akaito Coffee.
As I walked back to my accommodation, the stars twinkled above me, casting a magical glow on the island. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique place, a place where art and nature coexist in perfect harmony. Naoshima had captured my heart, and I knew that I would never forget my time here. I made sure to remember to pack sunscreen tomorrow!
