A Journey Begins

Today marked the start of our family adventure in Matera, a city I've long dreamt of visiting. Leaving the familiar landscapes of Denmark behind, we embarked on a journey to uncover the secrets of this ancient Italian gem. The allure of Matera, with its cave dwellings and storied past, was simply irresistible. I was eager to immerse myself in its unique atmosphere and share the experience with Astrid and Lasse.

Our day began with an early flight from Denmark to Bari. The flight was smooth, and Lasse kept himself entertained with his ever-present headphones and digital device, while Astrid enjoyed reading a book about the history of Southern Italy. I used the time to mentally prepare myself for the days ahead, anticipating the sights, sounds, and tastes that Matera had in store for us.

The drive from Bari to Matera was nothing short of spectacular. Rolling hills dotted with olive groves and vineyards stretched as far as the eye could see. The warm Italian sun bathed the landscape in a golden glow, making the countryside seem like a painting come to life. We stopped briefly at a roadside cafe for a quick espresso, a necessary ritual to truly feel like we were in Italy. As we approached Matera, the anticipation grew, and the first glimpse of the city perched atop the rocky landscape was breathtaking.

After settling in, we ventured out to explore the renowned Sassi di Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Sassi are ancient cave dwellings that have been inhabited since the Paleolithic period. Wandering through the narrow, winding streets felt like stepping back in time. The houses, carved into the rock, were a testament to human ingenuity and resilience. I tried to imagine what it must have been like to live in these caves centuries ago, and the thought was both humbling and awe-inspiring. Lasse, initially skeptical about the historical significance, soon found himself captivated by the unique architecture and the stories behind each stone.

The owner, Mrs. Angela, greeted us with a smile and recommended several local specialties. We started with Fave e Cicorie, a creamy dish of fava beans and chicory, followed by Paccheri del Casaro, a pasta dish with a rich and flavorful sauce. The ingredients were fresh and locally sourced, and the flavors were a delightful blend of rustic and refined. Astrid enjoyed a glass of Aglianico del Vulture, a robust red wine from the region, while Lasse opted for a refreshing lemonade. The meal was a true culinary experience, providing us with a taste of Matera's rich gastronomic heritage.

We stumbled upon Unique Store Italy, a charming boutique that offered a variety of handmade ceramics, textiles, and artisanal foods. I was particularly drawn to the handcrafted wooden items, reminiscent of my own work as a furniture restorer. We purchased a few souvenirs, including a small ceramic Nativity scene for Astrid's collection and a wooden toy for Lasse. Supporting local artisans felt like a meaningful way to connect with the community and preserve its traditions.

The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, providing us with insights into the local cuisine and culture. Astrid and I enjoyed a bottle of Aglianico del Vulture, while Lasse savored a refreshing glass of local fruit juice.

Matera had exceeded my expectations, captivating us with its history, culture, and beauty.

Before heading to sleep, I reviewed our itinerary for tomorrow. I am excited to explore the Crypt of Original Sin, Palazzo Lanfranchi, and Belvedere di Piazza Giovanni Pascoli. I am also looking forward to trying the local cuisine at Il Fiore del Latte for breakfast, Kapunto Matera for lunch and Dimora Ulmo ristorante for dinner. I am also keen to visit JAR - Beer, Wine & Bites for a relaxing evening drink.

As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family. Matera had already worked its magic on us, and I knew that the days ahead would be filled with even more discoveries and adventures. I am especially grateful that I remembered to pack my camera, even though I forgot the adapter and sunglasses.
