As our final day in Assisi drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia washing over me. This town, with its ancient stones and spiritual aura, had woven its way into our hearts. It was a day of tying up loose ends, revisiting favorite spots, and soaking in the last moments of Umbrian charm before our journey back to Silkeborg. Astrid, Lasse and I were determined to make the most of it, ensuring that every memory was etched in our minds.

Our day began, as many had, with a delightful breakfast at Ristorante Buca di San Francesco. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air, a comforting ritual that had become synonymous with our mornings in Assisi. We savored each bite, knowing that soon we'd be trading these simple pleasures for the familiar tastes of home. The family bantered about our favorite moments of the trip, from the breathtaking views at Rocca Maggiore to the serene atmosphere of the Basilica di San Francesco. It was a bittersweet symphony of joy and longing, a perfect encapsulation of our time here.

With renewed energy, we set out to explore the Fontana Maggiore. Although technically located in Perugia, the stones to build the fountain came from Assisi. I wanted to show Astrid and Lasse this marvel of medieval engineering and artistry. Founded in 1941 by Bishop Giuseppe Placido Nicolini, the museum was established to safeguard the most important artworks from the Assisi Cathedral and various local oratories. Housed beneath the cathedral, the museum boasted a collection of around 300 works, with approximately 100 on display across nine sections. As we wandered through the corridors, we were transported back in time, surrounded by sacred art, ancient artifacts, and historical relics. The museum was inaugurated in 1941 in the basement of the cathedral and the Palazzo dei Canonici.

Our final stop of the day was the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Assisi. This architectural marvel was built in the 1st century BC as a Roman temple dedicated to Minerva.
