A Fond Farewell to Assisi

As our final day in Assisi drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia washing over me. This town, with its ancient stones and spiritual aura, had woven its way into our hearts. It was a day of tying up loose ends, revisiting favorite spots, and soaking in the last moments of Umbrian charm before our journey back to Silkeborg. Astrid, Lasse and I were determined to make the most of it, ensuring that every memory was etched in our minds.

Our day began, as many had, with a delightful breakfast at Ristorante Buca di San Francesco. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air, a comforting ritual that had become synonymous with our mornings in Assisi. We savored each bite, knowing that soon we'd be trading these simple pleasures for the familiar tastes of home. The family bantered about our favorite moments of the trip, from the breathtaking views at Rocca Maggiore to the serene atmosphere of the Basilica di San Francesco. It was a bittersweet symphony of joy and longing, a perfect encapsulation of our time here.

With renewed energy, we set out to explore the Fontana Maggiore. Although technically located in Perugia, the stones to build the fountain came from Assisi. I wanted to show Astrid and Lasse this marvel of medieval engineering and artistry. Designed by Frà Bevignate da Cingoli and constructed between 1275 and 1277, the fountain celebrated the arrival of water to the city's acropolis via a new aqueduct. The intricate carvings and sculptures, crafted by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, depicted biblical scenes, zodiac signs, and allegorical figures, each telling a story of its own. As we admired the fountain, I couldn't help but reflect on the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the artisans who had created such a masterpiece so many centuries ago. It was a testament to human creativity and a reminder of the enduring power of art.

Next on our itinerary was the Assisi Diocesan Museum. Founded in 1941 by Bishop Giuseppe Placido Nicolini, the museum was established to safeguard the most important artworks from the Assisi Cathedral and various local oratories. Housed beneath the cathedral, the museum boasted a collection of around 300 works, with approximately 100 on display across nine sections. As we wandered through the corridors, we were transported back in time, surrounded by sacred art, ancient artifacts, and historical relics. The museum was inaugurated in 1941 in the basement of the cathedral and the Palazzo dei Canonici.

One of the highlights was the Corridor, showcasing archaeological finds discovered in the area, including sculpted capitals and a Roman sarcophagus from the 2nd century AD. We marveled at the Sala del Maestro della Santa Chiara, the Nicolò Alunno room, and the Crypt of San Rufino, each offering a unique glimpse into Assisi's rich religious and artistic heritage. The Perkins room displayed works donated by American art collector Frederick Mason Perkins, who had a deep connection with Assisi.

Leaving the museum, we felt a sense of reverence and awe, grateful for the opportunity to witness such profound expressions of faith and creativity. It was a reminder of the enduring legacy of Assisi as a center of spiritual and artistic inspiration. Before heading to our next destination, we paused for a quick lunch at Mangiar Divino. This charming restaurant offered a delightful array of local specialties, from handmade pasta to savory meats and cheeses. As we savored each bite, we couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment and gratitude for the culinary delights we had experienced throughout our trip.

Our final stop of the day was the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Assisi. This architectural marvel was built in the 1st century BC as a Roman temple dedicated to Minerva. In the 16th century, it was transformed into a Christian church, a testament to the enduring power of faith and adaptation. I was eager to show Astrid and Lasse the seamless blend of classical and Baroque styles, a unique fusion of ancient and modern influences.

As we approached the church, we were struck by its majestic façade, with six Corinthian columns supporting the architrave and a small pediment. The columns were originally covered in colored plaster. Inside, the Baroque interior was a stark contrast to the ancient Roman exterior, a reminder of the passage of time and the ever-evolving nature of human civilization. The temple was visited and described by the German poet Goethe during his travels in Italy, as the first ancient structure in good condition seen during his life.

According to legend, the temple was originally dedicated to Hercules, though the statue of Minerva led to the misattribution. Over the centuries, the temple served various purposes, including a tribunal and jail in the Middle Ages. In 1539, Pope Paul III ordered its transformation into a Catholic church, preserving its ancient façade while adding a Baroque interior and a bell tower known as Torre del Popolo.

As we explored the church, I couldn't help but marvel at the resilience of this ancient structure, a symbol of Assisi's enduring spirit and its ability to adapt and transform over time. It was a fitting conclusion to our exploration of this remarkable town.

With the afternoon sun casting long shadows across the cobblestone streets, we decided to indulge in a bit of souvenir shopping. Arte Assisi dal 1947 beckoned with its promise of handcrafted treasures and unique mementos. This charming shop was renowned for its exquisite collection of ceramics, textiles, and artisanal products, each reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the region. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by a vibrant display of colors and textures, a feast for the senses. Astrid gravitated toward the delicate ceramics, while Lasse was drawn to the intricate textiles. I, on the other hand, found myself captivated by the locally made artisanal products, each telling a story of its own.

After much deliberation, we each selected a few cherished souvenirs to remind us of our time in Assisi. Astrid chose a hand-painted ceramic bowl, while Lasse opted for a woven tapestry depicting a scene from the life of St. Francis. I settled on a small wooden carving of the town's skyline, a tangible reminder of the beauty and serenity we had experienced here. With our bags filled with memories, we strolled back to Hotel Il Duomo, our hearts full of gratitude and contentment.

As evening approached, we made our way to La Fortezza Restaurant for our final dinner in Assisi. This cozy establishment offered a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for reflecting on our journey and savoring the last moments of Umbrian hospitality. We ordered a selection of local specialties, from truffle-infused pasta to grilled meats and roasted vegetables. Each dish was a celebration of the region's culinary heritage, a testament to the simple yet exquisite flavors of Italian cuisine.

As we dined, we shared stories and laughter, reminiscing about our favorite moments of the trip. Lasse regaled us with tales of his adventures exploring the town's hidden alleyways, while Astrid shared her reflections on the spiritual significance of Assisi. I, in turn, recounted the history and artistry of the landmarks we had visited, hoping to impart a deeper understanding of this remarkable town.

As the evening drew to a close, we raised our glasses in a toast to Assisi, to our family, and to the unforgettable memories we had created together. It was a moment of profound connection and gratitude, a perfect culmination of our time in this enchanting town.

Back at the hotel, I took a moment to jot down my thoughts and reflections, capturing the essence of our final day in Assisi. As I wrote, I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. We had immersed ourselves in the town's rich history and culture, explored its hidden gems, and connected with its spiritual heart. We had laughed, learned, and grown together as a family, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we would begin our journey back to Silkeborg, carrying with us the spirit of Assisi and the warmth of its people. But for now, I would savor these last moments, cherishing the peace and tranquility of this remarkable town. As I closed my eyes, I could almost hear the echoes of St. Francis's teachings, a gentle reminder to embrace simplicity, compassion, and love in all that we do. And with that, I drifted off to sleep, dreaming of the ancient stones and the timeless beauty of Assisi.

I know that Astrid and Lasse will cherish these memories as much as I do. It is a trip that will be etched in our minds forever, and I am so grateful that we had the opportunity to experience it together as a family. This journey has not only enriched our understanding of history and art, but it has also strengthened our bond as a family, reminding us of the importance of shared experiences and the enduring power of love. As we prepare to return to our daily lives in Silkeborg, we carry with us the spirit of Assisi, a beacon of peace, simplicity, and spiritual renewal that will guide us on our path forward. And who knows, maybe one day we'll return to this enchanting town, to once again immerse ourselves in its timeless beauty and profound wisdom.
